It's pretty easy for me to abstain from things like chocolate and caffeine for Lent -- except for one year when I gave up ice cream, but that was because my workplace had make-your-own soft serve cones for 50 cents. On the other hand, I've sacrificed buying ponies a few times, and that's utter torture! I'm hoping to give myself a middle-of-the-road challenge this year, so I think I'll make a "swear jar" type set up and donate money to charity every time I catch myself cursing. I swear like a sailor, and it's terribly inelegant, so hopefully I can kick the habit a little bit and help others at the same time.
