One of my exes is someone I met online. I made sure that I met him in a local store parking lot and took along my best friend and her boyfriend just in case he turned out to be a total creep. I don't know your situation with this guy, but it's just a suggestion. You can't always guarantee that the person you're meeting really is who he says that he is.
Anyway, if I remember correctly, we had breakfast and went to the mall. You don't have to buy anything. Trust me, I've mastered the art of window shopping.
Bowling, as SapphireShores said, is good. Around here, it costs about $2.50/game and $1 for shoe rental. You don't have to be a super-awesome bowler. You're just having fun. Just be advised that a lot of bowling alleys tend to be smoke-filled if you're hitting them in the evening, as a lot of leagues bowl then.
You could also check your local newspaper to see if there's anything going on.
