You can dampen the hair and gently brush it out, smoothing it as best you can. That way the pictures will pick up that it's a little frizzy, but not make it seem worse than it is.
Definitely a gentle cleaning will be helpful. A damp cloth will work fine. Try and keep away from the tails to prevent water from getting into them and causing rust, though.
