Thumbs up homemade rehair tool

I wish I'd thought of this before!

I needed a heavy-duty punch tool for putting large yarn into custom heads- I break the needles in the slim tools that are sold online for rooting nylon hair so I improvised something with a little used piece of hardware from the tool box. The end screws tight to hold a large gauge needle in place, and if I open it up and turn the needle around I can use the sharp end to widen plug holes with.

Nifty!

Some people have had good success with using a snipped off needle (snip off the eye at an angle) and putting the sharp end in an eraser. I have used this method but put a bit of super glue to hold in it. Really, the pressure will hold it in.

I know several people sell rehairing tools as well. It is always neat to see the various options people come up with.

an eraser? Really? Shoot I could totally see myself impaling my hand doing that.
For years I got by with just the broken Y-needle and a pair of needlenose pliers to force it in with.

Got one, I bought LadyDaydreamer's tool and I love it for "regular" style customs.

My customs lately are monstrous affairs with thick sugar-coated skulls, so I required heavy equipment. I'm thankful that I'll no longer have to take breaks to salve my aching hands any more during hairing, I can do an entire head in one go!

:::makes note to proof read own post:::

It should have read "eraser end of pencil" not a plain ole eraser. Duh on me! The pencil acts as the handle of the tool.

Heh, I always did wonder how you got the yarn through the heads of your customs, Kar! I still try to inspect that shrunken pony head I bought from you at the 2008 convention, trying to see how you did the hair and the mouth and eyes without piercing your hand. It's still one of my favorite customs!
