Smile Hello! :) ...

I am new to the custom pony community and I thought to join this form for tips and tricks on how to make a good custom Pony.

My little cousin, who also loves My Little Pony, asked me to make her, her very own Pony. I honestly had no idea, upon looking online, just HOW AWESOME- this actually looks.

I have read a few tutorials online on how to customize your pony's and other factors. My mom went on Ebay and bought me a lot of 24 different sizes My little Ponys, ranging in all generations. I have not received the package yet.

First, my main concern is recoloring the body. Has anyone ever done this? (I know I will need to remove the hair)- but dose anyone have any good suggestions on recoloring a pony? (paint?)

The Ponys I will get are pretty used, scuffed up and have marks from childrens play, so i guess this is were I would need to start first If anyone is able/ willing to help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome to the custom pony community!! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

As far as "coloring" a pony goes you've got a couple options....
Option 1 is to paint the pony. Most everyone on here (i think) uses Acrylic paints to do so. Some (including myself) prefer to use an airbrush, but I'd paint by hand first to see how you like it.

Option 2... you could dye the pony. Most people use powdered RIT dye. You can find it at craft stores, Wal Mart and Kmart.

I try to clean ponies to the best of my ability before I customize them. That way when you paint them there's no grime showing through underneath the paint.

When you get your lot of ponies try to figure out which ones they are. I've always used G1, G2, G3 & G4 My Little Pony Reference Guide to help me identify ponies. That way you don't customize any that are in really good shape and rare or sought after. If you need help identifying any feel free to post pictures of them on here, we're all happy to help!

Feel free to ask as many questions as you need! I asked a ton of questions when I first started customizing and everyone here was super helpful and generous with their knowledge!!

Also at the top of the Trading Post you'll see a tab that says Tutorials... click on that and see if any of the tutorials listed help!

Oh, my goodness, thank you for posting to my question (s) I will take a gander at this website to see what ponys I have. (I see Minty,Bluebelle and Butterscotch- I HAD these growing up....how I suddently miss them...)

I will also try with a ..."Bait" pony and see how each step turns out, so I dont risk ruining too many ponys.

When my mom bought me the lot, I was not expecting that, and she suggested if I liked customizing, I could do more.

My first pony has to be for my little cousin Because I am cool like that lol.

I cant wait to do others. - I have so many planned!

I have plans on doing Rammsteins Till Lindemann "Engel" (Till Engel wings 1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! ) But this wont be for some time, as I would love to have the hang on the pony basics before handling this beast

I will use Acrylic first. - Thank goodness it dried relativity fast for multi coating. I will eventually invest in a air brush, but that would be for quite some time.

I will post a Photo of each Pony before I start it - and show the finished results.

Oh, oh!- and is there anything that the pony needs to stand on while drying? or will like, a paper plate due just fine, and not ruin the bottom of the hooves?

*hug* Thank you for replying! And thanks for showing me that Tutorials tab! I totally missed it!- Will check that out now! Yay. Thank you for your help!

For the painting, I do nothing but full body repaints. What I've learned over time, is the secret to smooth paint jobs is to let each layer of paint dry completely before applying the next, and to make it as thin as possible.

Starting out, people tend to rush things a lot and the paints lumps when rushed; it usually takes 4-6 completely dry layers of paint to get it to work.

Rit Dyes work for coloring bodies, and some people even air-brush! Air brushing seems to be a faster process for getting a full body of recolor.

Thank you for that tip!- I know it will take a couple of layers (dried) - to achieve the smoothness of a well painted pony. I am in no rush to ruin my pony's recoloring, because we all would like a pretty pony

So, Rit Dye, eh? I will have to Google this. Is there any recommendations you suggest for this? I have never herd of this - thats why I ask. I can also try this, to see if I like this better or less then acrylic.

I want to invest in a airbrush eventually, for more then just Pony's lol!!!

Edit: I found this site Dyeing a My Little Pony With Rit Dye | My Little Pony Customs -- I think this is how to achieve a dying a pony using this product.

However, I will have to fins a product that can remove stains from pony...hmmm
