eBay Payment Question
Hi guys,
I just wanted your opinion on something. Usually when I win auctions on eBay, I pay ASAP. However during the last week I had to send my payments late due to the fact that a bunch of people on eBay owed me money and didn't pay on time. This made me feel really bad because I know how annoying it is to wait a long time for payment and I don't want to do it to someone else. Usually, I don't depend on eBay money to pay for things on eBay...but I sold a lot of things so I figured that I would be fine (plus I just moved into a new apartment so I don't have tons of extra money).
I have always been extremely lenient with people paying me and I think that's the problem (people wait forever to pay me because they know that I will let them). I just had someone ask me if they could wait three weeks to pay me :( I don't mind making special exceptions, but it seems like so many people have been doing this lately. I have noticed that a lot more sellers are requiring payment within 3 days or a little more. What do you guys think about this and what do you think is fair as far as payment time frame goes? Thanks so much
Britt

Sometimes i really am short on cash, but i know ill come into some money soon and if its something which just WON'T come up again any time soon i usually bid and ask for a time extension, but not usually as far as 3 weeks.
I don't know, I guess cos i understand how strapped people can be. It is annoying though when you really need the money :(

I normally allow 14 days to pay - however right now I'm waiting on receiving almost $200 from transactions (same person that took place last June. She's very sweet, but I'd REALLY like to receive the payment one of these days. I'd say 5% take a month or more to pay. :?

I only wait up to 7 days the most 10 days but if you cut them slack the first time then they will always want you to do it, I never give more then 10 days to pay.

Personally, I don't bid on anything, nor buy anything in general, if I don't have the money. I think it's unreasonable for somebody to bid on something on ebay and then ask you to wait longer for payment.
A week to two weeks after auction close is a reasonable time period; anything beyond that is a big fat "are you kidding me?!" Two weeks is even kind of on the high side, IMO!
I think three days is a teensy bit short, but I can certainly understand a seller having that policy.

well I have had experiences that when I wait for payment for a long time but am waiting to pay for something with that money it takes way longer than it should.. or something else happens. Anyhow I would suggest not to bid on something until you have the money. I know it sucks this way but what if the person buying from you didnt pay you and then you are in trouble?

I have in all my auctions that after seven days, if payment is not made, I will relist the auction and block the winner from bidding.
24 hours before that, though, I contact them to see if they are planning on paying. Usually I get the payment shortly thereafter.
This one guy is really irritating me though. He replies to all my emails saying he'll send the payment and I haven't received it yet. So his 24 hour warning email is this evening. It's frustrating. He also said he can't use paypal because he lives in Peru. I'm starting to think that that's a line of bull.

Peru is not listed as one of the countries PayPal is available in, so it is probably correct.

i always pay IMMEDIATELY when i buy something on ebay. if i don't have the money, why on earth would i bid on it? and three weeks is an INSANELY unreasonable amount of time to take to make payment. that person would be met with a "no thank you, here's your NPB" from me. i think 7 days is the LONGEST any seller should have to wait for payment, ESPECIALLY when something like paypal is involved.

When I am the buyer, I pay via PayPal immediately and never bid on something if I don't have the funds in my PayPal account. As a seller, I have "please pay via PayPal within 3 days of winning this auction".
If I haven't been paid after 3 days I email the winner and remind them that eBay states that they have "automatically entered into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller" and I ask them when I can expect payment or I will file an Upaid Item Dispute. eBay does say that "usually the seller must wait 7 days after a listing closes to file an Unpaid Item Dispute".
