You got burnout! I went straight from Highschool to University, and despite great grades I seriously bunked off during uni. I got a dissapointing grade at the end because of my lack of motivation.

I see nothing wrong with taking some time out, try getting a job in the meantime. Nothing motivates you to broaden you horizons more than experiencing the narrow options open to you as an alternative. It will also give you time to work out better where you want to go, what you want to acheive and give you some very good reasons to stick at it. I wish I'd done it. It may be a good idea to start a journal beforehand though, so that you don't allow yourself to shut down.

I can only wish you the best with the MIL. The further away, the better I say.

Re:

I lost my interest in going to school when i was 12. I always hated it. I had to force myself through the next 6 years that are mandatory.
After that you can either apply for what we call "High School" but is more like college. I didn't do that. There was no way I could keep on studdying. With no interest what so ever in school and already doing pretty bad cuz' of that lac of interest I chose not to and started to work.

So you're not crazy, unless I'm crazy too :P You just need something fun to do on your freetime, something really fun that you really want to do to keep yourself going.

Re:

*hugs* I know how you feel hun. I loved college when I started there, a year after high school. By my last semester though, I had so much going on and no motivation to make myself go to class. Luckily, I had a group of amazing professors who put up with a LOT and helped me make up all the work and gave me tons of leeway that I probably didn't deserve. I was so happy when it was finally done and I graduated last June...

Now I see people going to school, and I get so jealous. I miss it so much!!! Go figure.

Everyone gets burned out sometimes, especially when there's other stuff weighing on your mind. You might consider talking to your professors if it keeps up...explain some of your situation and see if you can work something out. And if that seems unlikely...well, there's always the countdown method. Good luck to you, I know it can be hard!

Taking a break can be a great relief. I finished getting my BA back in August and took two more classes during the next term before taking a term off (my college does nine week courses rather then 18 weeks. That way you can take two classes at a time and still be full-term but with less stress).

I saw it as a reward for being the first in my family to graduate from college plus I really needed it. It's been five years since I left HS and that was the first real break I had.

I don't know about the uni the original poster is at, but at the uni I've been at, you can miss as many *lectures* as you want (the non-interactive talking-to-huge-amounts-of-students sessions), but only have a limited number of tutorials (in-dept classes in small groups with tutors) or practicals (labs, etc).

So it would depend on what sort of classes, maybe? Unless the system is completely different, of course >.>

I completely lost the energy for going to school and college too. I did great up until the 8th grade, and then bullying and realising my teachers were dumbing down everything they taught got in the way for about a year and a half. It's really hard to motivate yourself to go to an educational institution when they don't cater well to those of high intellects, but you can't afford to go to a private school. I got my rear end in gear by the middle of the 10th grade, though, and finished the year with only one GCSE (history) out of nine graded below a C.

Then, from there, I went straight into higher education, and started an International Baccalaureate. Again, I grew tired of busy work, and by this time had severe clinical depression. Needless to say, halfway through the first year of my International Baccalaureate, I quit.

I took a six months off, and worked as a junior sales person at my local convenience store, then started a GNVQ in Information Technology. After a year and a half, I realised that pretty much everything they taught me was actually useless in the work place, as what they were teaching was at least five years out of date. I kept doing enough to pass however through that year and a half, and just recently, my certifications began flowing in for the work I did do. I've got nothing below a C, despite not being there for the last six months of the course.

I think my biggest problem with education, other than realising my teachers weren't telling the whole truth on subjects like biology and physics, is that I was doing courses I didn't enjoy, and I burned myself out early in the courses by striving for nothing below a B.

My best piece of advice is to take a long hard look at the courses you're doing, as that may be part of the reason you don't wish to go in to learn more. Likewise, figure out what's going on with the situation with your BF's mother, as that kind of thing can have a long term effect on your willingness to get up and go.
