Lent's coming in 2 weeks! Who else participates?

I haven't decided what I am going to try to do for Lent this year. Last year I gave up drinking soda all together and also made the resolution to eat dinner at the table with my husband every night (we generally eat at TV trays in the living room LOL). We also donated to the rice bowl fund.

This year I'm considering giving up soda all together--I know it would be good for me--but I love diet vanilla cokes so much!

Hmmm...so I'm not sure!

It's supposed to be a sacrifice, Seirith. Which is why I'm giving up Coke instead of beets!

I totally sympathize. Next year will be the only year in my whole life that Easter comes before my birthday, so I'm pretty excited!

IANAC but the point as I see it is to consciously apply some self-discipline to one's more slovenly and carnal habits... Mainly to prove to yourself that you can be a healthier, kinder, etc. person if you put your mind to it, even if it's just for 40 days. Hence the celebration of Carnival ("farewell to the flesh") on Mardi Gras/Shrove Tuesday to help get those baser impulses out of your system before you have to get all ascetic. ^_~

my parents always made me give up meat...


uh yeah I dont participate anymore but if I were to give something up it would have to be... hmm.... some kind of food I guess. I cant think of anything off hand right now that Id give up in particular.

I think I'm going to use the Lenten season to focus on my faith, read my Bible more and work on my relationships. I think for me this will be more meaningful than giving up anything, that I will end up starting to do (or to eat) when the time is over.
