I'm using plaster for the molds and porcelain slip for the ponies. I've been trying to learn plaster casting for ages! I finally took a class that taught me what I needed to know. I'm thinking I will do a plaster and casting tutorial soon... There's a lot of important/unimportant details and things that were not obvious to me when I tried to read about it.

I tried to make a plaster mold like last year and it was either old plaster, or I didn't mix it right because instead of a pony mold, I made some white mud!

I'll check my bait box, and see if I have anything I can send your way.

on noes! old plaster maybe? plaster is supposed to harden when you add any amount of water... The ratio I was told to use comes out to about 1/2 plaster and 1/2 water by volume.

when i pick my next pony victim i plan to photo document the whole thing for a tutorial, plaster is really fun!

do you rub anything on the pony to protect it? I read you should use vaseline.

My teacher had us using liquid soap diluted with a little water. The plasticy mold releases are harder to get off, and make it harder for the plaster to dry out.

I've wanted to do that for ages but I never had the knowledge! That is so cool!! I'm imagining a line of paint your own MLP porcelain figures! Too awesome!

*actually, now that I think about it, it would have to be paint your own plaster figures, not porcelain. Or does porcelain take paint... I'm not sure.... Either way I can't wait to see this finished after the 2nd firing!!
