As a kid, did you ever make things for your ponies?

Thought I'd throw this out here, since I'm very sure others played with their ponies long before becoming the serious collectors we've become.

While giving some of my ponies a restoration spa treatment today (this is my primary summer project), I was reminiscing how I used to become crafty with fabrics and boxes when I was a kid. The ponies were my version of Barbie (I never liked Barbie much as a little girl), but I only had a hand-me-down show stable I'd purchased at a school tag sale. I had no dollhouses or anything. Well, I made my ponies houses out of boxes. (My show stable was exactly that.... a stable lol) I cut out windows and clipped curtains out of old fabrics and made beds and tables and the whole nine yards for them, and I *loved* it. (My grandparents.... well, they tolerated it, but weren't as keen on the makeshift pony-houses as I was!) Of course, there were never any doors to these pony-houses.....

I wrote up newsletters (longhand, the beginnings of my love for writing sits with pony play) ... and still have one or two I found in storage not too long ago.

I also have a couple of outfits that I made (they weren't much, but I'm going to give it a renewed try now that I can actually sew lol).

Please tell me that I'm not alone in being crafty for the benefit of pony play. I hope to hear some good memories you all have of playtime in "Ponyland" (as it was once called)!!

You're definitely not alone! When I was a kid I did practically the same: creating houses out of shoe boxes, doll houses, wooden blocks and empty shelves to give every pony a home. Thus, I created Pony City and Pony Village. Spent hours and hours perfecting my Ponyland: wrote newsletters just like you, created a library, a grocery store, a school, a gift shop, a record shop, a clothing shop and a railway system using my brother's train set, haha! So many memories, happy to bring them up! I remember that I made Tickle a physician in my city and built her a small doctor's practice, though she was more of a shaman actually, since my ponies could easily solve things using their magic! I made Lickety Split filthy rich and gave her and her three babies the largest house. She was nice though, unlike Majesty. I remember her character as rather cold and treacherous, probably made her up this way because of her cold colour scheme. All the baby Pegasi were members of the flying-club, where they -or rather my sister and myself- practised dancing routines on music from Madonna, Whitney Houston & Michael Jackson.
What else? O yes, using spells from my self-made magic books they could do a lot of things, like time travelling: remember making them old Egyptian (Tootsie, one of my sister's ponies, still has Egyptian pen markings around her eyes till this day, poor girl!), medieval and ancient Greek outfits. Loved to use aluminium foil: made a lot of crowns and jewellery. I also made necklaces for my ponies using little glass beads.
Wish I had a spell to go back in time now...

Just remember, most of my houses didn't have doors either, just windows indeed!
Why did I do that? Probably so we could play more easily and enjoy the interior scenes!

I don't really remember much of what I made for my ponies. My dad however remembers making a lot of custom saddles for them when I was small.

How awesome, High Flyer and HunnieBun! Love the idea of custom saddles... never had anyone but little Molly, human-wise. Did either of you have the human sisters?

And High Flyer, it sounds like you had even more room than I did! Sounds like your Pony City and Pony Village were really awesome! Glad to know I wasn't alone in having no doors! lol..... I think I like your theory on why!

One thing I forgot to mention in my original post.... I used to give them human first names, and as I've been going through them, I can still remember most of the names I gave them. Now, ask me what their Hasbro-given name was and I only have the rare answer lol.... I am coming along with proper identification, though! ;-) Anyone else do this?

I made little houses for them out of building blocks.

MLPMommy: when my sister was maybe 5 or 6, she got her first sea pony. As soon as she got home she says: "I want to name it Karate Kid!" LOL

I don't think I had any of the human dolls, just the ponies from the 80's and possibly some of the pony friends too.

I had all ponies; my parents never bought me any playsets or accessories or clothes, so everything was up to me. They actually bought me a huge wooden dollhouse, which came with a family of dolls, assuming I'd play with them. I wasn't a barbie/doll person either so the ponies took over the dollhouse (no clue where the doll family went XD). Or my sister and I would give each pony their own "house" which was actually a piece of living room furniture. Cotton Candy lived on the coffee table, Starflower lived under a chair, etc. I also drew food on little pieces of paper, as well as money and other little things I didn't have. Looking back on it, it didn't even matter that I never had official Hasbro stuff. I had nearly as much fun making things for my ponies than I did playing with them (even though my sister did most of the drawing stuff since I have no artistic talent whatsoever). I totally miss being a little kid. But collecting's fun too.

I used to get my mom to start knitting me a capes for the ponies, she would start the first rows and i would finish it. so my ponies always had nice warm capes.

I remember I took the hair bobbles with the hearts and made a rainbow of light (why they never made one, no one will ever know)
