Is the seller new to eBay? Miscalculating the shipping costs is a pretty common mistake among new sellers (goodness knows I did it, quite a few times). Maybe they were embarrassed to contact you and thought you didn't notice if they changed the shipping quietly? I know that's not an excuse, but maybe an explanation.

Eh, I bid (and won) recently for the first time in ages and am still having trouble getting the seller to complete the auction. It was open to paypal, BML, and other for payments; I selected other since I can only do cash/check/MOs, and the seller's refused to give me an address for mailing payment, instead opening a non-payment complaint against me. Apparently he/she meant it to be paypal only, and refuses to budge. People, they're weird.

You are totally correct, it is against eBay rules to raise the posted price of shipping once the auction has ended without the permission of the buyer. I don't think you need to worry too much about the situation, though - Ebay is totally set up for the buyer (customer service will openly admit this to anyone who asks) as the website could not function if it could not attract buyers. The seller can't even leave you negative feedback! If the seller ups his rudeness factor to actual aggressive talk or even swearing, you can report them to Ebay immediately - you do not have to (and should not have to) deal with that sort of thing.

If they ship the book thru media mail, then $2.50 for shipping sounds right to me.

I was just thinking we listed LOT'S of books, and the highest amount it would let me list them at was $4.00 shipping, because media mail didn't cost more then that, no matter what way I listed the shipping (even if I put it as priority) and media mail is SUPER cheap, so that book would have to way almost 10 pounds to max out the media mail shipping amount, sound's like they just wanted to make money off of you.

also, when you invoice someone on ebay, you can change the shipping amount (I assume to lower it to combine shipping) but you shouldn't be raising the price, if the seller didn't know how much to charge for shipping, they should have over estimated the weight of the item, that way if they over charged they could refund, not try to get their money back by changing shipping after the item ended.
