This could easily be a controversial post so let's all keep this conversation polite so we don't get this thread locked or deleted, okay?

iTunes released "The Last Roundup" yesterday and they've changed the opening scene. Derpy has a different voice, is no longer referred to by any name, and her eyes were changed a bit.

You can see a clip here: » Derpy’s New Voice DerpyHoovesNews.com

I personally like her new voice, as it seems much more cheerful and less mocking than the old one, to me at least. Maybe mocking isn't the right word, but she seemed like a stereotype character before, and now her voice seems like a regular cheerful girl. Rainbow Dash also seems less furious with her, now only mildly annoyed (which is kinda her usual state when things aren't going her way haha).

Post from Taxel (who doesn't have an account here but stated the situation much better than I could, and gave me permission to post her information here):

I was typing up this topic myself. Glad I checked. xD Just gonna copy and paste.

For those that don't know what happened:
Derpy is a VERY beloved fan character of bronies. When she was made canon they rejoiced. However, some people were offended by the portrayal of Derpy. The most common complaint was that she portrayed disabled people in a bad light. From what I've read the push for the change seems to have come mostly from Apple (as the DVD still has the original version according to what I read). According to comments I've read in the new version Derpy's eyes were toned down, but I didn't notice. Rabid bronies are now freaking out about Derpy being "dead", Hasbro being horrible, and the people who wanted the changes being horrible. There's even a petition to "save" Derpy.

I LOVE the change! I found the original very offensive because she was destroying everything, Dash was pretty mean to her, she has cross eyes, AND her voice sounded like a generic '****** voice'. I watch things like South Park and have a 'horrible' sense of humor, and there are only two ways to easily offend me (neither of which have ever happened in FiM). I hate the whining about being politically correct and being afraid to offend people. But in my opinion, the combination of everything was just too far without at least a Derpy-centric episode teaching the message of "its okay to be different" with Dash changing her tune. But Derpy only appeared for around a minute and only destroyed the town hall and had Dash get angry with her. (And the destroyed town hall was the entire reason so much pressure was put on AJ.)

Her new voice and the toning down of Dash's meanness are wonderful! I love how she actually sounds like a girl and actually seems to just be clumsy now. Even without toning down Dash's behavior and only changing the voice I think it would've been fine (although I do hate S2 Dash being the rude bully of the group all the time).

Honestly I think the rabid bronies need to calm down and realize that they are NOT the target audience of FiM. Young children are. Derpy can exist however they like in fanon, just like she always has.

I like new voice)And I saw that there was topic on it on Arena that was destroyed before I read it (was distracted by Kyurem's new forms).

It was not about all bronies, just rabid ones.Rabid fans of anything=no bueno.

And it was pretty clearly spelled out that anyone who doesn't agree that the edits are better is a rabid brony. Pretty poor form to start off a polite conversation with insults.

I'm not going to get baited into a flamewar though. I'll simply say that I disliked the edit for several reasons, and leave it at that.

I see now.Though I myself is tired of that "omg evul husbro ruint durrrpy" wails so much...I scream on people for it.

Have some new calming down pokemon here:

I prefer her new voice. It is less mocking. I am not really a fan of the name 'Derpy', they should have stuck with the alleged original name, Ditzy Doo. The eyes don't bug me at all, and kind of fit in with her clumsy personality. Looks like somepony needs glasses. I need them, and my eyes tend to 'derp'. The severity of the 'derpiness' depends on the day, how much sleep I have had, etc (and the more I derp, the worse my sight is).

Anyway, as a mother, I do prefer the voice change, and leaving out the name 'derpy', but it really isn't THAT big of a deal. I can see both sides. I like the cross-eyed, clumsy little pony. She is sweet. I do not like her original voice, because, as others have said, it may give the impression that they are mocking people with various disabilities. I don't think that was the intention, but as a kids show, they do have to be a little more careful. Some parents tend to go overboard with their outrage (as many of the adult fans are going overboard with their outrage about the changes). The adult fans are a bit more hardened than the parents and see it as comedy, not an insult or a way of teaching children ignorance and intolerance.

As for Rainbow Dash's attitude, what does anybody expect from her? She can be quite the rude little pony, look how she speaks to her friends and how she has treated Pinkie (who is a bit derpy, herself, personality-wise). That is just the way she is, and her treatment of Derpy is no different than how she has treated others, including her friends.

I really wish people wouldn't think it's 'okay' for Rainbow Dash (or anyone!) to act that way just because she's done it before, though.

As a kid I was kinda like Dash, just saying things without thinking, not realizing how insensitive I was to other people, especially my friends. One day one friend took me aside and said how much it hurt when I said those things without thinking, even though they knew I wasn't being mean on purpose and that's just "how I am." How embarrassed and guilty I felt after that! I wish they would cover something like that in a Dash-centric episode!

Maybe this edit, which tones down Dash's lines so she sounds a bit less furious with Derpy, is a sign that they are going to treat her character a little better in the future. I hope so. :)

OK, I lied, I do have one more thing to say here.

My Little Pony Discord Question at Gallifrey One - YouTube

In response to OP's closing statement, 0:48 to 1:15 of above. :) (And for anyone else who hasn't seen it yet, it's amusing.)

Please read more carefully, I clearly state that the second post was not my own post, but a cut and paste from someone else.

I would point out that the problem with that voice actor's statement in the video is that he is only seeing a small portion of the fandom with that experience. Of course he wouldn't get hoards of emails from little girls. They're not the ones who would be able to recognize his voice, find his email or other way to contact him, and send him their opinions on the show. But that doesn't change the fact that they are the primary demographic of the show, regardless of the number of other people who are watching.

Oh, I am not saying that Dash's attitude is OK, it really isn't (and she needs to be corrected for it... why does Twilight (or AJ) just stand there rolling her eyes when Dash starts, why doesn't she tell her 'that is enough!'). It is just that her behaviour is not out of character. It hasn't shocked anybody before, so I am shocked that people are now shocked by it. That's all :)

I liked the old voice better, the new one kinda grates on my nerves because it is so high pitched. Also if this was a cartoon with humans I would expect that voice to belong to the stereotypical dumb blonde receptionist who can't type without messing up her fake nails and twirls a finger in her hair when ever she doesn't know the answer to a question. So I actually find the voice MORE offensive now, especially since Derpy/Ditzy has a blonde mane. But hey thats just me ;)

I never really liked the name Derpy, its way too clunky for such a cute little pony.

I don't agree with Hasbro (or Apple) changing the voice and name of something that had already been aired, but I also hope very very much that they don't change it AGAIN just because another group of people raise a big stink about it. Because then, you give too much power to the fans and it will end up ruining the show.

It made me so sad :( I loved the old Derpy, she was slightly like me lol. Now her voice is just really generic and they don't even call her by her name. I liked the portrayl of the oddball, very clumsy pony as opposed to the slightly clumsy regular pony. Hopefully they'll at least call her by her true name again. Derpy is Derpy ^_~

True! I wish they would cover that in an episode! I would really like to see more episodes where the friends interact with each other and show their friendship.

I have noticed some people complaining that this season Rainbow Dash (and some of the other Mane 6) are acting way out of character, compared to the first season. Their characteristics seem... amplified, almost like they're becoming caricatures of themselves. Dash's overblown attitude seems to be stemming from that.

I really hope the show works on that! I don't think we need over-exaggerated characters in order to understand them. :)

I'm very glad they changed Derpy's name, it was offensive and I don't even need to go into it because everyone who came before me totally described it better than I could! Thanks Taxel, Dragonflitter, and quackadoodle!

I feel like Applejack in this instance. "Dear Princess Celestia, I learned ... nothing! Cuz I was right all along!"

I'M kind of in the middle of this. I loved that Derpy was named in the original airing, but at the same time I love her new voice.

I mean having Derpy be Derpy was amazing, but the only thing wrong was her voice. Because her voice actress was voicing her as a BOY, not knowing she's a girl. That was the root of the problem. Derpy's character was rushed, and nobody told her voice actress Derpy was a girl, so she voiced the clumsy pony as a boy, nothing more.

Her new voice is awesome and I wish they had used that voice first, it's closer to her "Muffins' line she had in the first season, but it now the timing of scene is way off because they edited her name out.

I do agree that Dash has been a bit too strong as a character lately, and I have a feeling there will be an episode coming up dealing with her accidental insensitivity. You can tell she doesn't do that on purpose, but nobody has ever really told her to knock it off either. Maybe an episode involving Scootaloo and Dash and Dash accidentally upsets her? I could see it.

I wish they took more time on the edit
It's like they recorded RD's voice on a low wuality microphone, the static! It sounds almost fandubbed!
I do prefer her new voice, but I wish they didn't take away the crossedeyes. There is nothing wrong with crossed eyes :c I like all of the edit except for the static and lack of crossed eyes

I liked it the way it was originally, but I can see this new version being much more PC, it's not any worse or better to me. It doesn't really matter what you do, you will offend someone somewhere. And I really don't think this is a "fix" if everyone were upset about portraying a disabled pony.

I would rather have a handicapped pony around, than to be in a world where they are out of sight, therefore out of mind. I just knew too many stuck up kids in middle school and high school that would pretend others didn't exist and would ignore or purposely hurt those kids just to keep them away from what they considered normal society to be.

I don't think it's any more appropraite to make fun of a ditzy or clutzy person than it is to make fun of a mentally handicapped person.
