I thought it'd be interesting to hear about how everybody first came across variants.

For me, it was a funny story, since I grew up with variants. It wasn't until I was older and I started going online to research my ponies that I realized they were different than the ponies everybody else had! It was really fun to discover that most of my childhood ponies were variants!

Where did you grow up that your childhood ponies are variants? I didn't learn of variants until joining the TP. I think some of them are sooo beautiful.

I grew up in Mexico. And when I started going online I kept looking for some of my childhood ponies but couldn't find pics anywhere! This was before anybody knew of Mexis. It was through the TP that members explained to me that different countries had made different ponies.

When we started collecting, I found a lady who lived not far from here selling a bunch of ponies. I came to the MLPTP to identify them for my girls, as well as Dream Valley. I found the same ponies on Dream Valley but they white and mine were colored. I then learned that they were "alternate Birth flower ponies" and that they were found here instead of the white ones. The same lady gave me a prototype that I still have today, shes a real little cutie. Here she is.

Here is a pic of my Alternate Birth Flowers ( before I sold them )

My collecting years were spent collecting variants, I enjoyed them the most because the were "different". :)

I have three of them CJ!! And by the looks of things, that will be all I will ever find in New Zealand. So very little ponies at the OP shops now. I'm coming back empty handed this time. At least I have those 3.

I LOVE the variant birth flower ponies! @Mirakat has two of them and I may have left some drool on them the last time I saw them...

Can I just say that I adore the Alt. birth flower December with that minty color and holly. Oh my! What I wouldn't give...

I didn't know that variants existed until I started trying to identify my lost ponies. I never had any, but I did have quite a few Euro exclusives. The sad thing is, I live in South Africa, which is the equivalent of a variant goldmine, and yet I never had a single variant!

Now that's enough to make a grown woman sob unconsolably!! so sorry!!!
I can't quite recall exactly how they came to my attention, but I think it was a vague concept when I admired the alt birthflowers in one of the MLP books, just paging thru, and realized they weren't available in the USA; then they really came to light when I discovered an odd sort of Blossom in my herd and posted pics here, just curious, because she looked different than the "duplicate" (regular) Blossom. (I was weeding out duplicates and she was headed for the bait box because she had no tail. Thank heavens the people here identified her as a Greek!!! She probably would not have wound up customised because my bait box still has almost every bait pony in it that it started with lol, but whew, close call!)

I can't really remember, I just recall seeing strange ponies on ebay and my husband buying them for me as a wedding gift. I got Argie Snuzzle, Medley, and Baby Confetti, and it only spiraled out of control from there.

I've been involved with the MLP community since it really started taking off around 2000. Dream Valley was online then, and that's when I remember first discovering that ponies were made in other counties, that weren't sold every where. The first ones that I remember coming around were German's, UK's and dutch... then other countries started to pop up. I just HAD to have some of the babies that weren't released in the US, because I love baby ponies. I remember the first baby buttons sold on ebay for $400! That was a huge deal back then, this was BEFORE G3 came out, when the collecting community was very very small. I miss it being that small, simply because ebay prices were crazy cheap. I should have bought more then... when I had the chance.

So does that mean we Americans have some variants to people in other countries?

Yes there were some sets that weren't sold in the UK from G1, for one they weren't able to order any of the MO ponies, those were US only. There were sets that were released here in stores and not there, I can't think of the sets though.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I picked "sweetie" as part of my SN after the sweetie babies, the first time I ever saw them was on dream valley.
