G1 Do collectors actually do this?

I was talking with one of my buyers the other day and they were talking about where they have bought ponies and some good luck and some bad luck.

Anyway, they said they had bought a lot of G1 ponies that were described to them as mint or near mint but when they got them they were more TLC so they tossed them. They admitted they were a newer collector, but my eyebrows shot up when I read that the ponies were trashed instead of taken to a thrift store or resold.

So my question to you is have you thrown any ponies away if you were disappointed with what you were sent? I imagine they could have been beyond repair, but from what it sounded like, they weren't. It makes me a little sad because I would have taken them.

That's screwed up! I hope you explained that they could have been restored, customized or traded.

I have only ever thrown 3 ponies away.

One pony I had as a child had a rust- explosion and my grandparents tossed her. I was sad.

Sweet Pop had her legs chewed off by my uncle's dog and my grandparents threw her away. I cried alot and was very mad at him.

My second Lyra Heartstrings I threw away because when I opened her, I was hit with this poisonous, chemical smell that burned my nose and throat. She actually did have to go. Its not like I could give her to anyone? Hasbro needs to quit being lazy about their QC. What would happen if a kid had that and it caused health issues?

I hoard all the ponies until I can sell/gift/restore them. I haven’t had any that I haven’t been able to save yet.

Yikes!! @Leave a Whisper thats so strange about the Lyra. I wonder if it had a spill or something on it while in shipping or at the store or something. I e never heard of that but I would’ve sent an email off to a Hasbro - in hopes of coupons or something. Hahah!!!

They spent money on those ponies, why wouldn't they try to resell or return them? It smells of a bit of entitlement or carelessness about money to me unless they got the ponies super cheap. There's a big difference between TLC and absolutely unsalvageable.

How can you do something like this g1 pony are hard to find these days If they want mints they should have brought 35h anniversary instead of throwing away hopeless pony who only need a little love And care I have wondered how bad
Hey really were like fizzy or cut hair or even
A little chewed or even a little marker on it how
Can you even fathoms even throwing away a piece of history it doesn't make any sense I love collecting for ponies who need a lot of TLC

I think this makes me wonder to much how many good toys have been thrown away old and new. :/ I made a mistake and threw out some newer ponies. Not the old ones. If I cant keep something it goes to here or out to the nearest thrift store. I do admit once I did put a G1 playset or two to the thrift store but Im sure someone came along and bought it. So I dont have a problem with that.

Mint and near mint G1 ponies are getting hard to find these days. Even some MOC and MIB ponies have issues. So these so-called mint collectors should know to ask questions before making a purchase and to ask for more photos and not expect cheap ponies and to buy their ponies from fellow collectors.

I think this person is very new to collecting and started out expecting mint G1s all the time. So when they come across something less than excellent, they are going to consider it trash.

Oh gosh I can't even imagine throwing away a pony, even if the condition was pretty much beyond hope. Then again, I hardcore pack bond with every pony I find so that probably doesn't help. XD I'll deliberately buy ponies in really bad condition or super awkward fakies just to give them a home.

The only real exception I could see myself doing would be a situation like @Leave a Whisper 's. That's a little terrifying.

That makes me sad. I can't imagine being so cash rich that i would ever throw away perfectly good items, especially when so many people in the world have so little. It sounds very much like spoiled, entitled behavior and it just makes me cringe.

I have only thrown away one pony ever. My cat stole her and hid her in the litter box then pooped on her several times. I was cleaning the box when I discovered it. This went wayyyyyy beyond Cat Pee Pony, lemme tell ya. It was more like LaW's Bio-Weapon Lyra, so stinky. I actually took her out and hosed her off, but saw the situation was just too bad to rescue. Poor ol' thing. It was a Sunny Daze. I bet she was dazed, all right.

@evilbunnyfoofoo apparently your cat had some kind of vendetta to settle with Sunny Daze. I think your trashing her was justified. My cat is not allowed in my pony room because she can't control her bladder when she's angry at me.

But let's hope that most collectors don't feel that sense of entitlement where they feel the need to trash ponies that don't meet their expectations.

I don’t think most collectors would do this. However, more and more often I see toy collectors (not just MLP) making poor decisions because they have not bothered to educate themselves. For example, picking up huge lots of toys because they’re (supposedly) vintage but not actually knowing anything about the specific line. How do you know you haven’t overpaid? How do you know there’s actually a market for resale? Or new collectors who are convinced they have a rare variant when really it’s just a faded Peachy. “But she doesn’t look faded!” they say. Yeah, she does.

We’ve all done stupid stuff when we were newbies. But it bothers me that newer collectors don’t seem to be interested in putting any effort into researching their toys, especially now when there’s so much information readily available (not like back in the day when we were buying eBay auctions with no picture and vague descriptions and we’re happy to get a pony in whatever condition). I know I sound like I’m yelling at the kids to get off my lawn, but c’mon! Don’t be doing this ridiculous stuff like throwing away good collectibles.

my kitties loved to knock off my ponies on the shelves too. They used to attack my customs. I swear it was a phase because they don't act that way now for the most part they just sniff them and go on their way. Maybe because they are old and dont want to move around as much. I think I like older kitties sometimes because of that.

I've had two ponies thrown away... the first was my forget me not as a kid. She already had no wings, her wing holders were clipped off, plenty of rubbing, and frizz. Then the dog got her, buried her under the patio, and she was found months later during our "clean up and move". With the chewed parts, dirt, and smell, my mom said she was trash, so she didn't move with us.

The second was a while back when I had just started getting serious about collecting g1's. I got a box of ponies that smelled so badly of cigarettes that I blacked out. Most of them were cleaned, carefully de-stanked, and either kept or sold cheap. One was a peachy with no tail, a mane trim, initials, only a hint of symbols left, marks on her body, so much pain dot mold, and a chewed face and feet. I couldn't find someone who wanted me to include her in a shipment, so I'm sorry to say, I threw her away. :( only a few months later I wouldn't have. RIP peachy.

I may be a horrible collector cause I customize more, but I've never thrown any away.

Some from my childhood have gone missing but not tossed.

The ones that went missing were stored separate from my main collection

I'm slightly traumatized by this post

First of all, I don't throw anything away (that's another problem for another day). Second of all, I have noticed some newer, younger collectors with seemingly unlimited budgets hoarding up ponies, but also very particular about condition. If you are that picky of a collector, you would think they would be super careful about making specific inquiries regarding condition. I'm thinking maybe these are some entitled rich kids in which case, I have this to say - Stop messing with my childhood and go mess with your own!

I see nothing wrong with customization since you're just giving them new life. A lot of collectors do this. I especially like when customizers take lifeless ponies and make them like new again, sometimes with an added twist (different colored hair or glittery symbols when they didn't have them before, etc.)

But just tossing a pony that may just have a trim or an eye rub....seriously?

I don't think newbie collectors will just toss toys they just bought (even more if they buy from eBay!, or have PP protection).

That seems like the buyer really did not care about the money spent on the ponies, or that (as I recently found...) the ponies were a "gift for a child" and the (adult) buyer didn't like the condition they were in to be gifted to the child.

In the second case, I am in a: Why would you gift a child second/nth hand ponies to a child!! You know nothing about the condition of said toys!!! There's ponies I was afraid to touch due to the condition they were in!!!

For my part, I think the only pony that's been tossed was a Sweet Notes that my dog caught, and despite so, said pony stayed with my sister a lot of time before being tossed.
