I did some research by comparing hair textures, and it seems the Fantasy Hair ponies that glow (Nightglow and Nightshine) have kanekalon hair for their glow stripes. That's why it is shiny instead of matte even when it is GITD; it holds curl, melts easily, and is kind of coarse and stiff. Working on these, I have fallen in love with glow in the dark kanekalon! I used it not only for Fantasy Hair Luminary, but for a Perfume Puff Big Brother.

Luminary #17-She-ra is the gift that keeps on giving for my G2s, lol. His Fantasy Hair glow accessory is Sweet Bee's crown antennae, now suggesting a firefly rather than a bee. His symbol is a mushroom.

Luminary #18- Kanekalon is my preference over wool, since it can be combed and combed, without any of it coming out. Also, it could be boil permed to lie flat (like the G2 above). His symbol is a scented candle.

Thanks for looking!

That antennae headpiece does suit him super well! The glow-in-the-dark effects are really fun. I have some Toyokalon hair in purple, green, and uv-change white-to-pink from 20 years ago when it was a lot harder to find new nylon hair, and now that the proper stuff is plentiful, I've been thinking about what to do with my Toyokalon. This is an interesting idea. Though the Toyo isn't quite as crimped it does have some texture that shimmers a bit. I think what helps to really sell me on a perfume puff is when the ends are all trimmed to a uniform length that kind of turns into a soft cone-shape. Most of the yarn puffers I've seen have ends that trail into wisps, which is a cool look but feels a little different than a perfume puff.

Now that I'm thinking on it, I still have a ton of vintage acrylic yarn in storage from my grandma's cache. I should see if any of it combs out nicely into a puff!

I think it's pretty when it is whispy, but doesn't that also mean it's coming out? That's what I like about kanekalon, it doesn't come out.

I thought about trimming the mane in a straight line at the floor, possibly displaying it on the NDS, then cutting the tail so it would also end at floor length. This is how the Puffs were depicted in Hasbro artwork like the comics and on the back of the cards. I still trained the mane to fall on the NDS, but he has the classic mullet layers.

I'm sssssoooo glad they made this stuff glow in the dark. It shines, not like other glow fibers, is affordable, unlike glow saran, feels like human hair, and can depict Perfume Puffs in various ways, or be boil permed to imitate straight hair (still has some texture). It's also the only chartreuse glow in the dark hair I can find (otherwise I have to mix chartreuse with off white glow hair or do an either/or kinda thing).

I'm curious about Toyokalon now! Gonna have to look that up....

What brand of glow paint do you use? Its so bright!

Deco art, but if I want to use pink glow in the dark it has to be ordered from technoglow or some similar website. The trick to make it bright is not to drag the paintbrush as with normal paint, but to leave one small opaque gob after another, so close they are touching, in a line. The drops dry flat, but they should be small. This means dipping the brush back in the paint a lot, so its good to pour some out onto a surface for dipping, as it will dry quickly in the bottle. I still go over it again after testing with a UV flashlight, usually about three or four times.

If you don't have the opaque glow paint color you need then deco art "10 x glow" can be painted over, as it dries clear, but it can dilute some colors like intense purple. Folk Art Dragonfly glaze can restore iridescent shine to their Colorshift colors line after Deco Art's glow paint makes it matte, but it will no longer look metallic, simply iridescent. I always seal over dragonfly with clear sealant after 24 hours full cure time (unless i'm lazy, then i might wait a little less than that).

"Orange" glow will appear green or white sometimes, as is the case here in the G1's symbol. In order to make orange actually look orange it would have to be many layers. *Lighter colors, like orange, that glow less brightly, might photograph more brightly because brilliant green will sometimes photograph as darker green. So the Perfume Puff's symbol is the same glow paint color as the G2's headdress, and the G2 is glowing brighter than the G1.*

The wispy ends are just from some of the fibers winding up longer than others, I think. But yeah, any brushed-out yarn will have some fluff that didn't get secured. Brushing it thoroughly before styling and trimming would be key, and the end length would depend on long the fibers were that made up the yarn.

I loooove the original Puff illustrations. I got Dainty Dahlia as a gift when I was a kiddo, and I spent so long just looking at the back of her box.

Those are some nice features! Glad you've found something you like so much!

I don't know a lot about it, I think it could be a side-brand of something. It doesn't feel like real pony hair but I think it will be nice on some customs. I'm planning on using the purple and green on Jellybean if the colors are a nice enough match with deflocked Magic Star. (boy I have a lot of projects to get done!)

@Luminary what glow in the dark paint did you use for your customs? do you have a photo of it so I can grab the right one? It's so vibrant, I want to try it out
Check 4 posts up and you'll see my answer to @Twinkle-eye. It's more about the technique than the brand- but i use regular old deco art. Pink is technoglow.
