Hello all! My name is Mary (or Maire, sounds-like-mare), though online I'm mostly Wri or Ember or WrittenEmber, and you can use whichever you like.

I live in the American southwest, in that oddity of a state where they don't have daylight savings time (Arizona), though I hail from parts widespread. I am an aspiring writer by night and boring as all get out by day. I love my (many) pets, read a great deal, practice archery, make things out of wool, grow cacti with questionable success, spend too much time following Girl Genius (best comic ever), and don't always get enough sleep.

Though I had my share of ponies as a kidlette, I have only recently rediscovered my soft spot for them (it must have been hibernating). Now I am beginning to collect G4 Ponyville Ponies, and their number is expanding ever so rapidly!

I was looking for a forum where I could ask questions about collecting and meet other pony fans, and I certainly seem to have found it! :satisfied:

P.S. These pony emoticons are adorable!

Hi! Welcome to MLPTP! (Not that I have much of an authority to say that...)
I grow cacti too! I like jungle cacti though, mainly... you know, those floppy South American things that grow in trees? Love 'em. I have a bunch.
Nice to meet you! :smilepony:

Hello & welcome :D hope you have fun here. Do love Cacti ever since mum got me one when I was little, dunno if I would be able to grow one though :p hehe

Hi Ember! :) I'm new too, but this is a great place to meet Pony fans.

Is Girl Genius that Steampunk comic? I might have to give that a look if so.

Welcome! :smilepony:

Thanks Sparkey Davis! Jungle cacti are so neat; they look like plants from some other world. Mine are mostly moon cactus in different colors. And it's nice to meet you, too!

Hello Lollipop! I don't "grow" them so much as just pick them up at the garden center when I find pretty ones and try to keep them going as long as I can. Thanks for the welcome!

Hi DavidC! Yup, that's Girl Genius. I follow it on the main site and on the official LJ (where you will recognize me straightaway by my username). Say hello if you stop by over there. :)

Hello and welcome to the TP :flutter2:

Greetings and hello's! I am Michelle from Calgary, Canada! I luv your username, rock-on!

Hello bigmlpfan! Thanks for the welcome. :)

Hi Michelle! Oh, Calgary is so beautiful! Not that I have been there myself (sadly), but I have friends there. :) And thanks! I use this name everywhere.

Moon cacti! Neat! I've been seeing those things all my life, but I don't think I've ever owned one – I just realised :surprisepony:
Maybe I was intimidated by them or something...? Not that that ever stopped me with most plants. LOL

Anyway, I'm a bit of a plant fanatic, so if you're having trouble keeping your cacti going, I'd be more than happy to chat about them – I've had my oldest cactus for more than ten years

Ten years, wow! That's amazing!

My first moon cactus was a gift from my niece. When it died, I got another, and when that died, another, and thus began a cycle that continues to this day. My current one just died in September, so I'm due for a new one.

They usually live about a year for me. (This last one was 11 months old almost exactly.) Everything will be going along fine, good colors, healthy-looking top and bottom, and then suddenly the bottom will "weaken". First it starts to lean a bit, then the skin goes transparent, and eventually the whole bottom cactus shrivels and dies (taking the top with it, of course). It looks like overwatering, maybe? But if anything I suspect that I underwater, because I think I tend to let the "drying out" period between waterings go on too long. :sadpony:

Welcome to the TP! I've never had cacti, but they sound like fun! I can barely keep a spider plant alive so maybe they wouldn't work very well for me. Hope you have fun on the forums!

Thanks for the welcome, dragonkiss! :smilepony:

Ever try Golden Pothos? It's the most determined houseplant I've ever had. I actually had one once that I put up on top of a bookshelf in a spare room and forgot about for five months. When I found it, it was dry as a bone and rather pale, but when I moved it to the living room and gave it a watering, it thrived. Wonderful little plant. :satisfied:

Got it in one! That's overwatering alright! :sadpony:
My recommendation would be to make sure the potting mix is really well draining and never let the pot stand in water... even if you think you've let the plant get too dry, still don't let the pot stand in water.
My experience with cacti (even jungle cacti) is that they can look shrivelled up like sultanas and still spring back to life at the next watering, but if you don't let the soil dry out between waterings, they eventually get rot. (That doesn't mean you should let them get shrivelled though LOL)
It's better to water too little than too much. I guess that's my main point.
I water my biggest cactus maybe once every two weeks, and even then I don't give it much!
I hope that's helpful! :smilepony:

No, I haven't tried one of those yet. I'll have to google it! Thanks :smilepony:

Ooh, thank you!! I really appreciate the help! :smilepony:

So I have been overcompensating for underwatering when I was not, in fact, underwatering. That explains so much... :blushpony:

Glad I could help! :smilepony:
Yeah, overwatering is apparently the most common cause of houseplant death. I've killed a few plants that way too (though I managed to save some of them by cutting them into bits and and re-planting the bits as cuttings).

Howdy from Texas! I'm a cacti fancier as well (no surprise where I live). I recently got some rope cactus from the Alamo site, and it's my new pride and joy. I can't wait for it to become large enough to plant outside in my sedum/cactus garden.

So happy to meet you!

The only plant I've ever successfully grown from cuttings is Purple Heart. I started with three tiny cuttings, and ended up with a four-foot-by-six-foot bed overflowing with the stuff. I love it. :satisfied:

Hello! Glad to meet you, too. :smilepony: Ooh, congrats on the new cactus. And good luck with getting it into your garden; I bet it will look great!
