I am all for self publishing or smaller publishers, let me get that said. The issue I have is with the amount of set up and exposure that you have to do yourself. Some people are great with this and have their own blogs and followers and there is no issue spreading the word about their books. I am not this person and I know this. I am not good with people, horrible at selling myself and self promotion. I need someone to help me with that and I need for them to be good at it. My issue with bookbaby as well as many other self pubs / smaller pubs is that they may list it/post/publish or suggest it but don't push hard enough for your book. That is up to you. I think that the middle package would be bare minimum if you did publish this way. I know it is not a black and white type answer, I have been turned off by publishing through them for different personal reasons before but would not suggest that I am against it, other opportunities came up about the same time is all. I hope my rambling thoughts about it help in some way.
