How do you remove the mane from a g1 pony in such a way that it can be reused?

The the easiest option would be to tie up the hair and snip it as close to the head as possible. You could maybe heat up the head so the glue loosens and then trim it from the inside? Idk if that would yield anymore hair tho.

I would think with any chemical removal options you run the risk of damaging the pony and/or the hair.

If you have a nice set of pliers made for navigating small places, and the pony has soft enough vinyl (heat helps), it's possible to pull out the hair plugs whole from the inside. I managed this with a Peachy that I customzied last year, and it's very handy to have the hair at its full length. I'd imagine it's possible to tear at the rooting holes by doing this, though, so be aware of that risk.

EDIT: Here's the type of pliers I use for reference. They're lifesavers for me, so I do recommend.

I just have lots of jewelry size needle nose pliers… I tried pulling it out, but ended up with a big fluffy mess with glue bits still on it. I’m hoping to use the adult mane to rehair a baby, so maybe trimming close to the head will work for this time. I’m definitely going to save the link to those pliers! Thank you!

What I used to do when I customized G3s is cut one plug off at a time (from the outside of the head), wet the end of the plug, and hold it near a candle flame. This would melt the end of the plug, making it stick together. And then I'd have a pile of hair plugs ready for a donor pony.

You do lose a little bit of length (but G3s have long hair so it didn't matter) and honestly . . . it's very tedious, lol. BUT it preserves the hair and man oh man, does it ever stay put once you root it.

Than you so much!
