Help Repairing "Pony Parking Garage"?

I finally found my old "pony parking garage" in the house, but it's in way worse shape than I remember. Ideally, I'd like to fix it, but it's basically falling apart and I'm worried that it's something I just need to trash.

Has anyone ever had to fix one of these before? Does this item have an official name? I'm not finding anything calling it a "parking garage". :(

Oh gosh I know nothing about that. I'm sorry it's falling apart. Have you cleaned it, for starters?

I lol’d with your parking garage term for it. That’s adorable and accurate. I love it.

This is the Dream Castle Collector Case. It can be a very easy and satisfying fix from what I know. But you will need to find replacement vinyl, most fabric stores do have it. And re cut fresh cardboard and get the old glue gun out.

Optionally just glue down the original vinyl again with some mod podge and reinforce the “shelf” with small bits of wood or a strong cardboard.

Surprisingly, a once over with Clorox wipe turned up almost nothing, just some dust.

Thanks for the ideas!! I looked around the fabric store and was able to find some light pink vinyl, so I'll see what I can do this weekend :lolpony:

So anyways, now that I'm done being sick and also finally found some more supplies I needed, I started working on this and thought I'd share what I've done so far.

The pink vinyl needed to go (with some light pulling it mostly fell off on its own!). Although when I pulled the vinyl off, the cardboard bits fell all over the floor, so I used linen hinging tape to reassemble it. (It wasn't expensive but it was difficult to find the right one.)

I decided it would be easier to repair the handle first if it wasn't attached the to rest of the unit, so I did that before taping. I made a 3-layer sandwich of cheapo illustration board and glued it together with regular Elmer's glue, then clamped it with binder clips to keep it from warping. (There was a small shim-type piece of wood to prevent indentations on the art side) .

I did the taping while the glue dried. The tape was really easy to use, but took some careful placement. The box says that it will only come off with mineral spirits, so I trust it will stay put.

The base was the most difficult. The rivets(?) are still firmly there, but that makes it incredibly hard to slide the tape in between the layers to attach the lid. The tape is very floppy and very sticky, so the best I could do was the cut it in small squares, then layer over with a larger piece.

This is what it looks like now! The clear vinyl is in a puddle on the floor since the supporting pink vinyl is gone, but I discovered some new issues with it anyways so I need to tackle that next.
I'm most pleased with the way the handle turned out. It's sturdy enough to hold the lid shut without the snap! :flutter2:
