Okay so via another thread I found this: My Little Pony Hair Styling - Buns and Twists | Pony Customs and I would love to try this out on some ponies, like some SLH G3's that could do with a new do.

But does anyone know how I could do this without having to resort to actually putting pins into the ponies as they're not customs?

I've never tried to do this type of style...but it seems to me that perhaps you could put the pins through the holes for the hairplugs without poking any holes in the pony itself. :) Someone else may have a better answer for you, though.

You can use those tiny little hair rubber bands, make the bun, pull the end tight underneath it, then put the rubber band around the base of the bun. It probably won't be as secure as the pins and you may have to try a few times before it works but it should work at least temporarily. It may work w/ just tying a ribbon too, although I haven't tried that. Hope that helps! :)

If you're crafty and have a needle and appropriately-colored thread, you can also sew the bun in place (and it can be removed later.) It holds better than you'd think, and if it strikes your fancy, you can even use fancy thread, bead it, or whatnot.

Yeah, seconding the suggestion to just secure a band/scrunchie around the base of the bun - it'll also help pull any remaining hair tuft under the bun, and keep it down there.

That's what I do with my own hair, anyway, and I'm certainly not shoving any pins into my head. ;)

You could also just do a bun, take some needle nose and clip off the point of a pin with a fancy head.. then put it through the bun as if it were a chopstick? Might work. It's what I do with my own hair. I'd add 2 pins though.
