I have done something bad

Here I am in another thread saying stealing is bad and today I stole something. Well, someone, really.

You know, I hate to say it, but I realise, I did sorta steal my neighbours horse today. Her name is Strawberry, a lovely bay mare with a large white blaze. For a whole week every day she's broken free from his yard, and come down to my house. She knows I'll feed her, I've stabled her before when he couldn't afford to feed her a few times. I've known her since she was a yearling. Now she's four, a beautiful gal and sadly, very thin. Not 'call the authorities thin', but certainly not in good shape to weather out a hard winter.

Each day I took a bucket a food, walked her down the road to her home, fed her and put her up. Today when she came, I put her in the pasture with my ponies instead. I have hay and feed, so she can eat well here. I tried to call the neighbour, but his phone is out (we actually have been without electricity for days, just got it on at about 4. Dang it's cold!). I know I should have taken her home, but she doesn't want to be there. I left him a note. He's a nice man, and means well. I'm sure he won't be mad, but I did take her without permission.

I have a little money in savings. I think I'm going to beg him to sell her to me. I know he loves her, but he can't take care of her. There's a stallion too, Tornado, but I have little pony stallions, so I can't take him. I just want to save Strawberry. I shouldn't have kept her though. Now I'm feeling guilty. I guess I'm going to post this and go down to his house and try to talk to him.

Wish me luck!

HUgs... hope all goes well. Maybe he will be happy for her to have a good place to live...

Sounds like your heart is in the right place, and that talking things out with the owner should be the right thing to do.

If they're as understanding as you describe, I'm sure they'll accept your offer. Who knows, maybe they were attempting to save that horse from a different situation themselves, but bit off more than they could chew but had good intentions~

Wish you and the horsy luck, either way~

I'm back from my neighbours house and Strawberry will stay with me for the winter! He really doesn't want to sell her, because he loves her so (I can't blame him, she is so wonderful) but he knows he can't feed her. He said with her elsewhere, he can afford to feed Tornado. It will save both horses from being hungry. He said he may well sell her to me, or even give her to me, but right now he can't part with her entirely. Either way is cool, as long as he and I remain friends and Strawberry is safe. And Tornado too.

When he saw me coming up to his driveway, he came out of his house and said, "Please tell me Strawberry is at your house!" I nodded and he said, "Then my prayers are answered." We went in, and talked about it, and he confessed he's just flat broke. I don't think he has enough to eat himself, so I invited him to supper, and got him a lot of food from my pantry to take home (I stockpile food, it's an old habit), plus a bag of dod food for his two little dogs. He knew she was fine if she was with me, and knew my house was where she always headed. When I told him I stole her he laughed and said, "Aw, you're her second home! I knew where she went."

I'm sad his situation is so bad, and sad I didn't know he was probably hungry too and too embarrassed to let me know. I have to make sure I keep an eye on him. He's not much older than me really, but his health is bad and he has no family. I have to step up my game and be a better neighbour.

Thanks for your kind words. I feel way happier now! Strawberry is safe and my ponies have a new (temporary) big sis!

How wonderful that he and Strawberry can rely on you to help them out. Makes me happy to hear of someone that reach out and have a big heart to help both animals and humans, they are very fortunate to know you.
Too bad other people in the world isn't as caring, god bless you for acting so kindly.

You are a really good neighbour anyway :D your such a sweety:smilepony: At least your neighbour can always go & see Strawberry if she is at yours, he knows she is safe with you :satisfied:
At least you care enough to make sure there all safe & have something to eat :D

I'd say this man is lucky to have you for a neighbor, Evilbunny. :)

I hope things get better for everyone. :)

And this is what the holiday season is about, is giving and helping others in big ways that warms their life, not just jazzed up gifts... :satisfied:

It really warms me to see this kind of scenario. :) Such good friendship you guys have, and it's very warming to see how accepting he was of your help. :smilepony:

You are an excellent person and obviously care very deeply for your neighbour and for Strawberry. I'm glad that things have worked out. I'd love to hear updates on her (and possibly see some pictures when she gets fattened up)!

Thanks everyone! Strawberry is doing great today. She's pretty greedy with food, so I'll have to watch her so she doesn't go crazy, but otherwise she's going to be fine here. And while the ponies are a wee bit leery of having such a big big sis, I know they'll adapt. Beth, my guard llama, already knew Strawberry from when she was a yearling and seemed quite pleased that she had returned.

Here's some pics of them in the icy yuck we call home. (Thaw come soon!) I know it looks like midnight, but this is at 4 for the evening feed.

Strawberry says, where's supper? I'm here for the food!

My little stallion Buddy leads the way for the herd. It's grub time! Behind him are Jewel, Ponyta, Misty, Beauty, Sparkle and Twinkle. Misty and Beauty sort of blend together as they're both black as pitch.

Sparkle, her filly Misty, Jewel and her colt Ponyta follow Buddy to the mess hall.

Strawberry keeps a close eye on my son, because he has the feed. We have to bring it in by wagon because of the ice right now.

As I make my way through the woods I am followed by an small but eager army.

Mmmm! Chow time! Nom nom nom!

When Strawberry starts to look better I'll put up more pics. My little popos (ponies are popos, my horses are hohos. Some are in another pasture. I'll post some pics of them one day too in my gallery) will look much better photographed when I have more light and they don't have evil glowing eyes.

Beautiful pictures, you are lucky to have ponies, they are gorgeous and they look happy =) I am glad Strawberry is there to get better, can't wait to see more pictures. Thanks for sharing :satisfied:

You;re more than welcome! I love showing off my babies.

OMG your ponies are ridiculously cute with their winter coats!

This story makes me so sad, but I'm so glad you are helping Strawberry out. I feel bad for poor Tornado, all alone over there, but at least he will be fed.

Honestly I can't imagine not feeding your horses because you can't afford to. God he needs to give or sell those horses to someone who can take care of them. I really hope they never require vet care - poor babies...

I hope he never asks for Strawberry back, it sounds like you are an awesome equine mom.

Aww, they're so sweet! Thanks for posting pics!

I know what you mean about their winter coats, Galacticatt! I just love when they shag out, they look like little prehistoric cave paintings. They fluffed up early too, so I knew winter would be hard. They help me tell the weather.

Evilbunny you are an absolute angel! You have done such a wonderful thing.I hope you, your family & your beautiful ponies & horses have a very merry christmas & a safe ,happy & prosperous new year!! I hope the new year only brings joy & good things to you ,you deserve all that & more xx

You are a super sweetie, applejack girl! :D

Today my four legged buddies got carrots as a treat, so they said I was awesome. Tomorrow when I have none, they'll swear I suck.
