Everyone in Equestria knows that Starswirl the Bearded is one of the most powerful ponies there is. He is a figure from pre-Equestrian times, responsible for seeking out the Alicorns, taking Luna and Celestia under his hoof, and mentoring them, coronating them into Princesses, and also for creating thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of spells, single-handedly. But what if everything we learned about him isn’t as it seems?
From the beginning, in a comic book that addresses how he acquired his signature aesthetic of a cloak and hat with bells lining them, we learn of Starswirl as an eccentric old stallion with a questionable fashion sense, But what if it was all a ruse? Who else do we know that is powerful enough to reign as the ‘father of all monsters’, bearded, and has an obsession with bells? A certain goat by the name of Grogar, that was only mentioned back in season 7, and finally given an appearance in season 9, that’s who!
What if- in the past, Grogar faced down with Gusty, who stole his bell, and at some point, with the remaining magic he had- took the appearance of a pony in order not to raise suspicions in locating its whereabouts? Think about it- with Grogar in the guise of a pony, he’d more easily be able to study pony magic. He’d be able to take on a “ponysona” under the alias of Starswirl the Bearded- a wizard with a bell motif-and forge ahead in crafting thousands of his own original spells-many of which could’ve been used to discover the Bewiitching Bell that Gusty had stolen and hid. In the episode “Luna Eclipsed”, Twilight even claims Starswirl to be “father of the amniomorphic spell”, so Grogar- altering his appearance to become a pony named Starswirl wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.
Additionally, by doing so, he would have his hooves on the Princesses, teaching them his dark ways as a “mentor”, very subtly. How did Celestia learn to use the Dark magic, back in "The Crystal Empire", to teach Twilight it? Likely through Grogar in the guise of a ponysona he created, Starswirl the Bearded. And his ways would be taught to the most powerful pony who studies magic- Twilight, trickling down from the highest position of government power. The fact that Twilight worships his false form, Starswirl, is just icing on the cake.
“But what about Limbo? If Grogar was Starswirl all along, then why did he trap himself in Limbo with the Pony of Shadows?” I can hear you guys asking.
Simply- it was intentional. Being the father of all monsters, Grogar/ Starswirl would’ve had to have had a hand in turning Stygian into the Pony of Shadows through his own actions. Once having become the Pony of Shadows, Grogar- remaining in the guise of Starswirl, would’ve same that the Pony of Shadows wanted to rule Equestria, which didn’t align with his own goals of reclaiming his position of Emperor of Evil over ponykind. So he sealed away himself-the remaining pillars, and the Pony of Shadows in Limbo, to ensure that his ‘son’ didn’t usurp him, while also cutting off the pillars of hope and harmony from Equestria. There, he would be able to keep an eye on both threats, until the time was right for him to escape from his self imprisonment- alone. But he hadn’t accounted for any pony on the outside to free him from Limbo- along with the others.
Now, we enter headcanon territory.......
If Starswirl was, in fact, Grogar- the father of all monsters- in disguise, then I would love to see Lyra and Bon Bon's Secret Monster Intelligence League of Equestria (S.M.I.L.E) getting involved. Perhaps we learn that they have a branch of their agency that was secretly keeping tabs on the leaders of Equestria- Celestia and Luna, under suspicion that they were in alliance with Grogar- or rather, spawns of him, with monster blood. Perhaps the populace of the three races had been wrong in assuming the alicorns were harbingers of harmony, but the entirety of their race had been magically and artificially created by Starswirl, who is Grogar. This would explain the disappearance of the other alicorns. This would explain his transformation into a pony, to learn of the pony ways and mentoring his agents of darkness and securing them in the highest seat of authority over the ponies, while he, personally sought to reclaim his original powers that Gusty had stolen from him.
If this were revealed to be true, then I could easily see Celestia and Luna's "retirement" in season 9 being a coverup (as there are many, we are told, in "Lyra and Bon Bon and the Mares from S.M.I.L.E" book, by G.M. Berrow). That is to say, the Secret Monster Intelligence League taking the Princesses- monsters in their own right- into custody- and painting it as "retirement", and setting up Twilight and her friends in their place, in order for there not to be chaos and confusion among the populace.
