G1 Is there a hierarchy of rarity/value?

Is there a price guide that stays up to date for ponies, especially G1? Or at the very least, a pyramid or hierarchy of who are the rare ponies vs common ponies? I'm pretty new, I only know of 3 expensive ponies (Mimic, Cutesaurus, Rapunzel) and I want to see who would be more viable for me to look for on a budget.

For the most part, as far as U.S.-released G1s go, a lot of the mail orders are the most expensive and rare like Rapunzel, Sweet Scoops, and Mommy and Baby Pony. But the most expensive G1s are going to be Venezuelans and Colombians I believe. It's really hard to keep track of the non-U.S. releases.

Check eBay completed auctions (make sure you choose sold items, not just completed) and that will give you an idea what ponies are currently selling for.

Generally, the early "sold in stores" G1s will be cheaper and easier to get. Condition will play a role as well, of course. And accessories are often more expensive than the ponies they came with, so those can drive up the price.

Also really wanted ponies (that aren't that rare infact) are for example Mimic (twinkle eye), Red Rose (Perfume Puff), Oakley (pony friends, Moose), Diamond Dreams (Merry go round) and Pristina (princess pony). Their price seems to get sometimes pretty high cause they are wanted ponies (why? I don't know:p)
Ponies that weren't released in US are almost always more expensive than US ponies

Thanks for the info @h1m3. I didn't know Pristina and Red Rose were popular, or that Oakley and Diamond Dreams were THAT popular. I want a merry go round pony but maybe not that one. I thought Cutesaurus was the expensive pony friend. I love the male ponies but I guess the princes and mountain ponies will be out of reach on a budget as well.

And for @Elfpony 's suggestion, the cheaper ones would be the ones in the earlier years in the US on a guide like strawberryreef, right? Maybe that's why I got so many Y1 and Y2 ponies from antique shops as a kid... they were the cheap ones.

Oh my goodness there are tons of high priced ponies if you count Nirvana. Most of your rainbow ponies are reasonable, sea ponies are sometimes higher but not overly expensive unless they are a rare one, many of the TAF ponies are reasonable with the exception of the babies and a couple of the adults sometimes selling over 40.00. I have found that some ponies may be priced higher just because they are in mint condition where that pony might be hard to find in nice shape. So, the prices are all over the place.

It sounds like there's some common knowledge, I'm surprised there isn't at least a vague list of what's rare or common. I have a few rainbow ponies, a common sea pony, two TAFs that were no more than $15. I browsed ebay for MOC ponies, but they're pretty expensive it seems. I just like to open my toys myself but not for that price lol.

Oh no yea anything MOC is out of my range also. I have found ponies in just about each release that were affordable but, then there is that one in that group that is more expensive. It is weird.

If it's due to demand, I suppose that happens, especially if one was more popular for kids to play rough with. If it's due to how many were made, I wouldn't be surprised because companies seem to be aware of collectors, and/or the demand of children. I know Star Trek figures did that in the 90s.

I know it may sound lame on my part but I didnt wait when I got a G1 pony for this reason. The prices go up and down like the stock market. I kept thinking if I didn't get so/so the prices would be up to far for me to even get them. :/

Yes that's why I'd rather not wait on getting the ones I really want, like Paradise, though I would need a practice pony if I want to deflock. White SS ponies seem to yellow easily like my Scrumptious. I know at least 2 of the ones I got ~13 years ago have gone up since then, considering none of them were over $10 at antique stores.

I always use bluerose's guide and cross reference it with eBay. I always go for the lower end if I can.

I was pretty shocked when I found out how spendy some can be, too. I think some ponies were also just more prone to problems with the plastic. Fading, cancer, etc. That makes them even harder to find.

Almost all pony friends are quite expensive :/ Lion is the least (?) and cutesaurus is good second (I think) after Oakley. I forgot to mention that Munchy and Nightglider (TAF) can be also pretty wanted and pricy

I think spunky is the cheapest and easiest to find.

Spunky is the camel, right? That would explain why that's the only friend I have, though I saw several at a local antique store years ago, including Edgar the elephant.

I think spunky is the cheapest and easiest to find.
This is great news for me, I have a lot of the friends but not Spunky! So that means I can get one and not break the bank lol

my daughter had to sell our cutesaurus to fund my service dog's surgery. Now she just has spunky. Cutesaurus is the most expensive I've seen so it'll be a while before I can get her a replacement. And, yes, spunky is the camel.

I think Cha Cha was hard for me to get too. I was lucky I have them all. :)

Very lucky. I'm not interested in them personally. We didn't have any to begin with. My daughter loves them, so now I'm realizing how htf they can be.
