Plushie Patterns?

A question for those who make plushies: Do you use patterns? I'd love to have a plushie of my persona, but can't afford to have one commissioned. So, I wanted to make one myself. Is there a pattern I can get somewhere or is their a trick to estimating how to cut the fabric?
 
I made my pattern. I think some people use the G1 patterns. They were made by Butterick. They pop up on Ebay now and then.
 
I use my own pattern as well. Ditto to babyseashimmer, If you want the Butterick ones check on eBay esp. in stores.
