I'm new here, and stumbled upon this forum as I was looking into older G1-G3 pony toys. I want to get into customizing and was looking to gather up as much info as I could.
The prices on ebay are so menacing :(...
But I shall not give up! I have an old Daisyjo pony (which I found the name of after 1 hour of searching, lol) that I will try(?) to customize. I've only recently set to do this so aside from a couple of supplies I have nothing, haha.
As the title says, I'm from Romania. (Is anyone else from here as well?)
I first saw G1 MLP on TV sometime during 2004+(?) as we got everything else later. (Also due to the country being in a communist state until 1989) I was enchanted by them. I used to doodle all day ponies ponies ponies!
Sadly, I never got any MLP figurines (except the one mentioned above) until much later, sometime throughout 2015-2016. (Even so I only got a couple of them which I'll list later if anyone wants)
Nowadays I'm into drawing ponies and hopefully learning to animate as that's what I'd like to do in my future.
Sorry for making such a lengthy post, I'm just excited ^^"
I look forward to meeting you all! I was honestly surprised, usually sites like these are pretty much dead and it always makes me sad to see remnants of what there was, and also that I missed out on them.

Welcome to the MLPTP! How interesting that you didn't get G1 until almost a decade after it ended. Were G1 ever for sale over there that you recall? I can imagine that would make collecting them much more difficult. eBay can be ridiculous and I would imagine shipping costs get you too :( I enjoyed growing my collection in the beginning by getting "lots" of ponies. It was more up front cost so I could only save and do it periodically but I found the cost per pony and shipping was usually better in the end by buying them in a lot. Now I'm at the point though that out of 100 ponies I might only need 2 and it just isn't worth it anymore, unless it's an amazing deal. Hopefully you can snag some deals here and at least have some pony friends to chat with :)

Hehe, thank you for the kind words! I was really young, I think there may have been some for sell but I never asked my parents to get me some because I was in my "Webkinz" phase by then. (Was a thing that if you bought real life plushies you got a code to play an online game. They had horses so I was sold.) And I was also aware of money issues so I just played on the pc and never asked for anthing. Funnily enough I never thought about it until now. They got that pony for me purely randomly, but I am glad.

I was born in the 2000's so definitely, I can't remember a thing about collecting ponies. And sometimes, what appeared on TV (unlike now) wasn't always synced with what was in stores. Like, just imagine. If it ended a decade before, meant that they weren't making toys for it. So finding any to import would've probably been a HUGE hassle to deal with. So they just let it be. I don't know how I found out about G3 and I used to watch and play with them online. Then G4 rolled around and...here I am! With a couple of toys but not much because they are so expensive!
I'll look into buying bundles but I also messaged someone here. Sadly, they have not responded yet.

And you're right about the prices! If there's no international free shipping, I'm looking at well over $30-$40 dollars per shipping. Since a dollar is 4 times the value of our currency here, you can imagine I don't want to spend over what feels like $250 just importing a pony, yea? I hope it makes sense.

Welcome to the forum. I find your story quite interesting. I am from Texas in the USA. Yep buying ponies can be expensive especially when you are in another country. You are probably about the same age as my first niece. So if you were going to get yourself some ponies, what generation appeals the most to you? Or are you a fan of them all? I am a G1 collector oh and I love G3 also.

I feel as if G3 is the easiest to edit. I love G1 as well as it's the first I saw on TV, as said. G4 is also very nice, but the newer toys with their open mouth look a little...creepy. I'm definitely a fan of G3.
Although what I never hear about is G2. Do they even exist? Toy form? I have no idea.
I'm just so enchanted with everything and this new world I found out about.

Yes there are G2 ponies they look quite different. I am not fond of G4 sculpt so I agree with you about the mouths there. G3 ponies if you are looking to customize them, paint and change the hair you should look for what is called a "bait." A bait is a pony in poor condition in which no one will mind seeing it have new life through customization. Some of us don't like taking a perfectly beautiful pony and changing it for no reason, but that is just a personal thing.

I can see your point! I love the original my little pony toys, I think they are quite wonderful. I guess I could look into baits. It could be a good start!

Well, always remember it is up to you ultimately. I don't like altering toys too much. I will admit though that every antique toy or doll that entires my house is de-stuffed and washed and restuffed for health reasons. I have to destuff everything because, the antique cotton doesn't dry as well in the plush. So, I pull it out and wash it in a pillowcase. Short of sewing things back up, or repairing damaged ponies I leave them in their natural state unless they are full of spots, missing hair and looking sad. lol

As much as I love the pony toys, I don't think I would have much use for them (I'd play with them a bit but in the end, I would go back to doing something else), even if I wanted to. It's all a learning experience :>

Yea for me I don't use the ponies for anything except sheer enjoyment of looking at them. To me it is kind of like collecting figurines. I don't have room to display mine so they live inside a wardrobe, but I do get them out many times. Chances are you will find a pony in every room in the house that is out visiting. So, for you it sounds like you would like to use them as a canvas for artistic expression. That is wonderful to yes?

I do quite like making things out of my own imagination. Although sometimes it seems as if ideas run dry and I'll look at others and think: "****! Why didn't I think of that?"

It'd probably take me forever for my first custom, haha.

Art in any form can certainly make the mind go blank sometimes. I have sat down to draw or sew something and just not been able to think of anything. On another day I sit down and have several ideas. The human brain can be so weird.
