Wesley was escorting me to the fresh food pantry at the school today. We walked from the office out the door and around the corner into the room they were using. On our way we passed a female human with a very dirty probably Chihuahua poodle mix. It was on one of those awful extension leashes and came rushing at me and Wesley barking like mad with it's teeth out. Wesley, I'm proud to say, behaved perfectly no barking growling pulling on the leash just a look acknowledging the dog was there and real, and it got to only six inches away. Wesley could have torn it apart if he wasn't so well trained and behaved.

After the pantry, carrying heavy bags back to the car, we took a different longer route to avoid the nasty dog. Well, that didn't work. They had let the dog off of the leash completely! It ran up and bit Wesley! On his bad leg! Wesley turned and growled then we walked too fast for my broken self while the owner tried to catch it. Wesley behaving perfectly, again. It took every single ounce of my self control to keep from hulking out on that dog owner by picking up a nearby metal bench and smacking her with it. She's lucky that I'm naturally a pacifist and that there were children present. Her dog bit mine and she didn't even apologize. Her dog was off the leash and clearly not under control on school grounds during school hours. So. Not. Ok. I'm writing to the authorities about this.

That burns me up. Your poor little pooch should not be getting bitten, just because they're too lazy to train their poor dog. I'd be fair tempted to smack her myself. And what will she do if the dog bites a kid next? Still nothing? The dog will end up being seized and put down when it's the owner who is at fault. Oooo... that just makes me burn up.

Is Wesley's leg okay? Poor little guy.

Definitely write them! Give a good description of the woman and animal. She has no reason to have it offleash, especially with its behavioral issues.

Put HER onna leash!

You should have words! Ask her how she'd like to pay a vet bill for an already healing dog. What a horrible woman. :madpony:

Poor Wes.

The dog had such bad teeth that it didn't get to good a hold of Wesley. Thank goodness he's a speedy little dude even with his bad leg. It is scratched, so the vet put him on antibiotics as a precaution and it wasn't deep enough to need stitches. Poor guy is hurting today. I'm definitely calling, emailing, and snail mailing the various school officials. I'm now further in the hole for vet bills, too. :(

So... Wesley's not doing well. Since the bite was on his bad leg, it may have managed to shift the hardware inside. We're waiting to see if he starts to feel better before Thursday. If not, he'll get an xray and possibly need the hardware surgically removed. I broke down and got him pet health insurance. I may have to change vets, though, because last a tooth extraction and cleaning cost $200, this year it's a minimum of $1000 just for cleaning! I understand inflation, but this is ridiculous. It's not like they take payment plans or give discounts of any sort. None of the other vets raised so drastically. :(

Vet care is incredibly expensive. I'd say sue the lady, but I doubt she has any money, and lawyers are expensive to boot.

One thing I am incredibly grateful for is the ability to perform most of the medical care my animals need. I give them all their vaccines (I can't buy rabies vaccines in TX, but I can in Oklahoma), do most of their vetting for illness/injury. The only thing I need assistance with is anything that might require surgery (although if it's an open wound I can give stitches) or getting them neutered/spade. I know if I couldn't, I would be drowning in vet bills.

Well. I found a new vet with reasonable rates. I took my last dog to them and they are good people. If it has to do specifically with Wesley's leg we'll go see the orthopedic surgeon, but it is truly insane how they've raised their prices. All i can think is that maybe someone sued them?

I could technically get a personal injury lawyer and make the school pay the vet bills since he's a service dog. As long as the school's make some changes, I'm not going to. Our school's have insurance, but they're broke. I received donations to cover the vet bill, and got good news, too. Wesley's leg is getting much better. They xray won't be necessary so i don't have another astronomical bill coming.

I can't do surgeries, but basic wounds and shots i could do no problem by myself. However. Since he's a service dog, it's much better that i have a vet confirming that he's current on everything jic I ever need to present proof.

Stories like this really grinds my gears.

As someone who has worked in the veterinary world for 15 years now (omg I feel old saying that), I hear this a lot. Good one on getting pet insurance though will they cover anything for this since it’s a pre-existing condition? I don’t know, things here are so different than in the US when it comes to animals.

As far as the rate for dental sx, that’s about run of the mills costs here. I know in Ontario (Canada) vets have to abide by the OVMA price guide that goes out annually and if they say price goes up then vets have to raise the price or could loose their license to practice for breaking oath... it’s really dumb but how it’s done to be “fair” here. So vets can price high or low on the scale they are given each year for costs. Usually if you live in a city you’ll pay more than country.

If I didn’t work in the industry I would never be able to afford my dogs. Espically Zephyr and his 9 surgeries and 2 chemo treatments. *face plam*

I found a new vet. They're who I took my last dog to. $150 for teeth cleaning. I really think my old vet got sued for their rates to go so much higher than any other in the area. I'll still go to the orthopedic surgeon for Wesley's leg. I did decide against the insurance for a few years. It would be worth it for a puppy.

Being that I now work in an emergency and referral clinic, I got pet insurance for my new pup. She’s only just 6 months and we’ve already had to use it... she nabbed my grandmothers medications. Luckily, it wasn’t too high on toxicity side and she was just a little more quiet than usual.
I digress, I’m happy to hear Wesley is doing better and you were able to find a more affordable vet. With those prices I may be driving cross border. Lol

Poor baby! Glad she's ok.

Glad things are getting a little better. Our vet has no personality but he does do a good job and all. Also his rates are good so I guess not bad. I still think he is a robot.
The Vet I did use when I had to put D my Great Dane Down were the most wonderful of people and I am sad I can no longer afford to take my dogs there. But they were wonderful people and did help me when it was time to let go.

It's rather funny because last time i went to this vet was about 17 years ago. The son of the head vet is back from his studies overseas is going to specialize in orthopedic surgery. He's all grown up now and kinda cute, too. ;)

Our vet is really expensive. I have an insurance plan for Yuki so once I pay like 250.00 they cover 90 percent of everything else. I am almost there since Yuki is sick. He is just like Aki was a stone maker and we are really hoping that the food and antibiotics will get rid of whatever process was getting started in his bladder. He doesn't get to have any treats anymore unless they are his food. He can have veggies but only certain ones. So, over night he hasn't been able to eat his usual fun things. Oh well, the cat has the same thing. The dog food bill is going to take a chunk of our income that is for sure. I spent 75.00 on food for the dog and the cat two days ago. 170.00 on Yuki's bill for the illness. So, we have no groceries right now. Boooooo hissssssss I am living off the oddest things. Part of this is my fault though because, I didn't know Yuki was going to have to go to the vet and I bought a few things we needed and then boom. I hope everyone's pets get better.
