Hi.

I was just wondering how rare SA ponies really are and which ones are the rarest of them? SA Cotton Candy? SA Seashell? SA Applejack? Does Discolouration from age and whatever else they have been though in the past few decades lower their value?

I was just wondering as I have read about Nirvana ponies and SA ponies seem to be pretty hard to find pictures of or any additional information about.

Any advice and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

First of welcome to the trading post!

Second of all from what I've gathered they're some of the rarest ponies out there. I did a lot of research on variants a couple months back when I was buying mine (a brazillian pony) and I've only seen one South African pony, and that was the bubbles from a user over here a few years back (?)
On discolouration I think if its real bad it might but if its minor and isn't visible on display then depending on the collector it shouldn't lower value too much.

Hope this helps!

South African ponies are extremely rare... easily the rarest "country" in all of G1 pony collecting. There are only one or two of each known SA pony in the collecting community. Condition doesn't have as much of an impact on their value due to their extreme rarity. SA ponies will sell for well over $1,000 even in condition that would be considered "poor" or "bait" for a more common pony.

It seems that there are SA versions of most of the ponies from US Year 2 (Applejack, Bowtie, Cotton Candy, Bubbles, Seashell, Starshine, Parasol, Sunlight, Windy, and Moondancer have all been found), and a few from Year 3 (Powder, Sparkler, and Heart Throb). Reason dictates that there are more Year 2 & 3 ponies that were produced, but until one surfaces on the collector market no one knows for sure.

Years ago there was a web page from a collector that grew up in South Africa. It said that imported Hasbro ("US" or "UK", most likely) ponies were sold along side the cheaper alternative which were produced locally, under license... much like the unlicensed fakies we see today. So we can guess that SA ponies were probably made in a smaller quantities than some other ponies sold exclusively in specific countries if imported ponies were sold at the same time. Due to local culture, used toys from 30 years ago are not as readily available to the collectors market around the worlds, which adds to their rarity. Many of the SA ponies in people's collections have been found in second-hand/thrift/charity shops or hidden in eBay lots, in countries where saving used toys in good condition is more common.

I learn so much here. I didn't know any of this. Thanks for that, KitKatVintage!

KKV is very wise. Listen to her and you will learn so much!

(she's also super awesome) :satisfied:

I live in South Africa and found a South African Applejack a few weeks ago in poor condition at a thrift store. Kinda epic. I'm also more than likely going to auction her. Not the hugest fan of them so I'd rather she went to a loving home.

Hey there! I know this thread is super old but I've just rejoined mlptp after ten years of silence...
I am that SA girl who had that webpage all those years ago KitKatVintage refers to above... :)
In fact pics from my old website are still around - been 'borrowed' by other people over the years lol! Every now and then I come across a pony photo on some site which is MY collection!! Quite funny actually!

I still live in SA and currently have a few SA variants. They are very rare even in SA.
I came across two quite by accident yesterday much to my excitement! That never happens!

Anyway my question to you is... are they REALLY selling for $1000 and upwards??? Seems really high to me!

Curious!
If they are worth that much I may be persuaded to sell some!

Xxx

Hi & Welcome back! Congrats on your recent finds!!

To answer your question about value - yes, they are still selling in that range. More SA ponies have turned up in the last few years, but they are all still considered extremely rare & valuable. Some with major flaws have sold in the $500+ range, but most are still valued at $1,000+. Some have even sold for several thousand a piece, but transactions at those top values are often done privately (not on eBay, etc) so there's no "public record" to say this pony sold for $xxxx.

If you still have pictures from your old site, I would absolutely love to see them again (and I'm sure others would love to see as well). :) Did you have an original backcard on your site or am I imagining that? lol

Hi there!
Thanks for the welcome!!! It's nice to be back after all these years :)

Wow that's a lot of money! Maybe I'll consider selling one or two for that price lol!!

Yes I did have an original back card! You have a good memory!! I still have it somewhere! All my MLP stuff is in storage at the moment as we are building at home.
I will see if I can dig the pics out...not sure if I still have them on my laptop.

Here are the backcard pics that were on my website years ago...
it has the English and Afrikaans on it.

Wow neato yup i have yet to see a SA pony in any condition to sell :) i can dream lol

Hi everyone, so I am very new to this and have a few MLP's that I got and among them is a South African Bubbles. Is she really that sort after? I am in South Africa :)

Since she's in a completely different pose, someone might pay well for her.
