hi all !

I need some advise on the best place to display my G1 & G3 ponies.

I currently have two areas in which I can store my ponies , my basement and my office. Here’s a little bit about both areas;

Currently they are displayed in my office which is located in the front of my house. It gets very bright light all day and direct sunlight for Atleast 1 hour a day. Because there is such great light I also have several house plants in there as well. (Ive outgrown the current shelf space available in this room and would need to buy more.)

My basement is fully finished and carpeted. We use it as a theater room. It stays quite cool down there all the time (maybe 60-63). It does not get direct sunlight or very bright light for that matter. ( I have a lot of unused shelf space for my collection to grow for quite a while before needing more )

Which is the best place to display my ponies ? HELP!

The basement with a dehumidifier. Direct sunlight will fade your ponies eventually, but you want to avoid mold from moisture and also dust sometimes so the dust doesn't become ingrained.

Everything Tak just said. :)

Before I take over my hubby’s cherished basement shelves and spend a small fortune on dehumidifiers ...

If my ponies were NOT in direct or bright sunlight but still in my office, would the basement still be better ? The shelving I’m looking at getting would keep my ponies from any bright or direct sunlight.

Biggest reason I ask, is my basement is quite large ( 1000+ square feet ) so id have to purchase a few dehumidifiers to cover that area and they’re quite pricey . Shelving is definitely more cost effective , but at the end of the day I’m going to do what’s best for my collection

Darker, cooler temperatures are generally better than direct light, but humidity is also something to be avoided. Even indirect light will cause fading over time.
Do you find the basement very humid when you’re down there? I ask because perhaps the dehumidifiers are not necessary.

I only suggested the dehumidifier because, with the moisture here, black mold can be a big problem. When my house was weatherized they put in two bathroom fans that come on every 40 minutes and are super quiet. They stay on 20 minutes and vent through the ceiling. As long as I leave the bathroom doors open most of the time, the whole house is kept dry enough. The fans are programmable for duration and frequency to make them just right for each home. The county had a program that basically paid for them. My parents, however, have a basement, and, while it doesn't feel moist, it needed two fans and is only 2/3rds the size of my whole home.

Elfpony makes a great point. It makes a huge difference where you're located and the specific climate there.

My suggestions include several that have already been commented:

- NO natural sunlight
- A dehumidifier for areas prone to humidity
- Likewise do not keep in an area that gets too hot for too long (ie: attic in summer)
- Personally I like keeping an air filter on
- Do not paint your shelves, lest they stain the bottoms of your ponies feet or stick to them. If you do paint your shelves, you'll need shelf liners.
- Shelves that have tracks and can be moved up or down using brackets give you a lot of room for creativity

Good luck! We'd love to see what you come up with! <3

Thank you so much for all the suggestions!

Thankfully where I’m located in the PNW the sunny days aren’t too often this time of year so Atleast I have time to get things figured out. I plan to purchase a few ikea bookcases to display my collection ( no matter where they end up ).

After speaking with my mom about the situation, she recommended getting a “ damp -rid “ tub and place it in the basement and monitor it over a few weeks time. She says I should be able to tell how humid the basement is that way, before going out and buying dehumidifiers. The temperate is always pretty steady and cool in my basement year round , so if it’s turns out it’s not very humid , my ponies will have found a new home!

.. if not I’ll be displaying them in my office on shelves that will not put them in direct sunlight ( just the the light of the room during daytime) and keep a close eye on them ( not that I don’t already)

I’ll be sure to post up some pictures when I get things figured out

Sorry to piggyback on this thread, but I’m just wondering, can artificial light affect ponies at all? (I.e. if they are next to a lamp shining directly on them?) I’m also setting up my own display and want to make sure I’m not causing any damage!

As far as I know it depends on the type and wattage of the bulb as well as wether it's exposed or in an enclosed fixture. I'm going to follow this.

I do know dust can become ingrained in the g1 plastic if you don't dust regularly. Plus moisture is bad. I keep mine in a China hutch.
