G1 Sundae Best ponies are remake poses, and a weird Unicorn hair tradition?

Two very interesting things I discovered with G1 and wanted to share!

If you look through the US release of G1, for a while all unicorns (with the exception of gimmicks like rainbow ponies) had two colors in their manes. All earth and Pegasus ponies had solid. I find this even more odd, since in from year 6 and onwards, earth ponies could also have 2 colors in their manes and unicorns just have solid color hair. Did they just forget?

I believe all of the Sundae best ponies have their own unique poses. The collectors pose stopped being used for a very long time. But then randomly they remade it for Swirly Whirly then never used it again. Peppermint Crunch is a remake of the first Pegasus pose that stopped being used long ago, then again, never used again. If you compare Banana Surprise with any other pony that is in the bow tie pose, her head looks different. Same thing with Coco Berry. They're both unique molds. The other two I've never personally owned, so I can't say much about them. Why didn't they use these in any other sets? Why did they make these new molds for this set in the first place, bringing back two old ones and updating them, to never use them again?

They used the cp for the birth flower ponies, stocking, and lil tot, the shy pose was reused for mummy pony and sweet scoops. I don’t think they could reuse the molds since they have the 3-d symbols that no other g1s had, but they were used in other countries. Just my thoughts. I’m not an expert.

It's just that with the ones I mention, they're remade versions that have differences in the body, sizes and more. But then they were never used again? Especially with peppermint crunch? At best, she is just based on the firefly pose?

I’ve always found it very odd myself. It is strange that they have small differences and we’re never used again. Who knows what goes on in hasbro? lol

Oh yes, the early G1 unicorns all have that unicorn stripe (unless their set is already multicolored like Twinkle Eye ponies, Rainbow ponies, etc). I think it was just a stylistic choice to make them seem more magical and special . . . unicorns being the most magical of ponies.

The Sundae Best ponies all have their symbol molded directly onto their body, so they were destined to have unique molds no matter what. I guess they figured "If we're going to make a new mold anyway, might as well revamp it a little." I think some of the 2nd set of Princess ponies have the same head molds, though. Like the one in Posey's pose. It is interesting that they went as far back as the Collector pony mold and Firefly mold, for sure!

Well it is easy to make a new mold from an old mold model. You tack on the new shape to the model, then cast a new mold over it. Easily done if you're thinking of retiring the old models anyway and don't mind recycling them. You did mention that they never used that pose again, right? Well, there's your answer. Instead of just 'retiring' (aka tossing them out) the old models, they decided to try the 3-D cutie mark gimmick by recycling them instead..
