School was supposed to start tomorrow. The teachers haven't gotten a decent pay raise in a decade. It all finally hit a breaking point. My girl is still required by the state to go to school for 180 days. Each day we start later just means summer will be that much shorter. So stressed and unhappy.
Trying to look at the bright side. I get more time with my sweet girl right now.

Teachers here frequently go on strike. Usually they will take days through out the year to even out what the kids miss. (Winter/Spring/Summer breaks)

They already said that they're tacking them on to the end of the year. :(

That’s sucks. For the kids and families.

Plus drivers, office staff, the teacher's dependants. They stopped all health benefits for the teachers.

Wow! Teachers here would have a stroke if they heard that. It seems every school year one school board or another has gone on strike for one reason or another. Last year it was the University professors. Year before that it was public elementary and before that it was catholic board... so we will see what happens this school year.

Stopped health benefits for teachers? That is SO messed up omg

It's state wide. All the drivers, office staff, and teachers are still on strike and not getting anything. Meanwhile the superintendent gets 200k a year.

At least I'm not a working parent. I can't imagine how hard this must be for them.

So teachers are supposed to just work themselves to death with no medical coverage?

Why even have teachers in that case. So messed up and I fully understand why they'd strike

Everyone in this country should have universal health coverage.

No one should be without.

They do normally have coverage. It's just while they're on strike. I still think it's a low blow by the superintendent. School was supposed to start the 28th. Now we're looking at the 4th. I won't know until Monday. The teachers do have most of the families and elderly backing them. It's just the young, entitled, ppl with several children that seem to think a couple dollars over minimum wage would be acceptable, and the school board and superintendent, obviously.

Oh I see. The health coverage is gone just while they strike

I know the raise thing has always been an issue cause over a decade ago they forced a family member of mine to retire instead of giving her a raise when it was due

They were like "oh by the way, you're retiring now lol good luck with that"

I never understood why higher salaries for teachers wasn't more important to the powers that be. Administrators certainly make sure they get paid handsomely, they should ensure our teachers are as well. Our kids are our future. We should invest in them and invest in the people who work hard to teach them.

Of course, you gotta love the administrative/bureaucratic mindset that just wants to 'save' money in order to line their own pockets. I ain't bitter or nuthin'. :p

EDIT: This is my 6666th post! Now I never wanna post more so I can keep the number! :lolpony:

Lol. Wow that's a whole lot of time on here. :)
It's been two full weeks now that means that if they stick with the 180 day requirements plus snow days, thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break, then we'll be lucky to get out of school before July fourth. The parents are all standing strong behind the teachers. The community organizations have been setting up events and extra free lunch programs. The daycare's are all keeping extra staff and many ppl have volunteered. I highly doubt that this school board and superintendent will make it through the next election. :p the after school sports still started on time since they're run mainly by volunteers. So many kids are sad to not start middle school or kindergarten. There are a few dissenters saying that the teachers are causing too much traffic and that think the teachers are being greedy. I have some of the teachers as friends and I'm behind them. I just hope they sort it out soon. It is impacting so many lives adversely. They knew this was coming when school let out last June. The board and superintendent put it off hoping the teachers would cave. I think it's just so low class the way they've gone about doing this. I'm glad that most of the community is behind the teachers and, even though most other districts have reached an agreement, I hope our teachers hold out for what they deserve. (The other districts essentially gave the teachers what they were asking for).

That said, I'm so worried about the 180 day policy. They're talking about longer days to keep school from going into July. My daughter is already on the bus by 8 and doesn't get home until after 4. I try not to think of it considering that I've got two surgeries and so much else coming, too. One day at a time.

Well, I've been here 5 years so that's approximately 1,333 posts a year.

I am oddly prolific!

I can understand your frustration. They're doing all these things without once considering what is good for the kids or how this affects them. My spouse works at a big college and they have a lot of internal turmoil right now. And my Poopsie is worried because no one but her seems to be worried about what will happen to the students. School is a big deal. Students should be the number one priority. All these rope pulling contests should be going on during summer so the kids don't have all of this adult crap hanging over their heads and keeping them from their education.

Do you have dates set for the surgeries?

Not yet. I see the orthopedic surgeon on the 18th. We already discussed surgery and I've injured it again since. (Two days shy of one year from the first injury and in the exact same way). I can't even poke my kindle, which is my only computer, with my right hand. My right hand is very dominant so it's extremely frustrating and debilitating. Much worse than the carpal tunnel. Not so much from pain as from feeling wrong. There's something that just isn't right in there and a whole year of physical therapy, steroid injection, and just ignoring it, didn't work. The other surgery I was just referred for so maybe it'll be my Christmas present (yay?). It all depends on what they find in my shoulder.

It's hard not to re-injure yourself. It's not like you can stop living and poof! Suddenly someone starts magically doing all the things you HAVE to do. I keep hurting the knee worse and worse, but I have no choice. I have to do the farm work and help Action Hank. He does the majority of it, but it just can't be done alone. Plus I would go crazy just sitting around. That isn't my way.

I hope they can do something that isn't too terribly invasive and is something that won't destroy you financially. The money is such a huge thing. I don't have insurance and it's this huge horrorshow. I feel like I should sell of a kidney or something to try to earn money to get the operation. :D

Wouldn't it be nice if life was like D&D. We could get a cleric to heal us and boom! No more bum body parts!

Oh hey both my kids' schools are going into the 4th day of teachers on strike.

I have found out a lot.

State ruled that funds will be allocated for teachers' raises.

Some schools are dragging their feet wanting to skimp out on the raises and stash the raises away for "rainy day funds".

Or put it anywhere else but where it was allocated for.

Most schools surrounding our area just gave the raises and they are in session as normal.

But my town is being extra extra dumb about it.

And my mom works at a school some towns over that had to get rid of its music program, library and field trips just to stay afloat.

But since the raises are a separate fund, my mom got a raise and her school she works at is in session.

Being anti-union is harmful to everyone.

Not the teachers wanting their raises.

I can't imagine why people don't want people to make really good salaries. They are literally educating our future. Instead administrators get their hand sin the coffers and want to take the money for our kids and use it for dumb crap like football stadiums, that benefit just a few children but certainly fill the bank. But does this cash ever get funneled back to where it belongs? Heck no. Teachers scramble to make do on what little they make, and have to buy their own supplies on top of it all. Ridiculous. And it doesn't just stop at the lower grades, colleges do it too. My Poopsie is a dean at a big community college and you would cry if you saw how all the money went to everything but the teachers and students.

I don't blame people for homeschooling at all, but I sure don't blame the teachers for the situation.

I’m a dog mom. ;) So, happy I don’t have to worry about anything like this anymore.

It does however concern me that as kids go through the education systems it’s harder and harder to find teachers who genuinely care or have “time” to care about the students. I know here a lot of funding had been cut to schools and the education systems. Our students are loosing out on extra curricular activities, various school clubs and the arts.

Growing up I was always in clubs, excelled in the arts programs and joined various teams. I was/am a nerd and loved the extra time this gave me at school with my friends and fellow students. (I was totally a Rachel Berry.)

It’s so sad and scary for the future.

But for now I’m just a dog mom. Although I’m probably going to end up being one of those women who decide to get pregnant at 40 and end up with 8 all at once. (It’s a running joke in my family because I’m responsible.)

Yeah, the cutting of extracurricular activities really bothers me. My sister had tons of activities and clubs after school. Once I got in high school some years later, there were NO after school clubs, just once a month club days that were too infrequent to be of much use. Granted these were different schools in different areas, but it was still pathetic.

Book smarts are important, but so is having fun optional activities. Those help us grow as a person and help us figure out who we are and want to be. It's not like many of the "practical" courses are that practical to start with. How about instead of algebra we having budgeting, which EVERYONE needs to know. Though if a math kid wants to take algebra, fine.

Anyway, tangent aside, it's really irritating that the higher ups are refusing to give what was specifically allotted for the teachers. Honestly, what did they EXPECT to happen by denying them an approved raise?
