The Bleaching Horror!!!

So, after the many many posts recently about cancer spreading and whatnot, I decided to stick some of my ponies with cancer in very diluted bleach to kill it. That is something I will never be doing again.

So, in went 4-Speed, Dancing Butterflies and Seashell.
4-Speed and Dancing Butterflies only had cancer on their bodies, but their heads wouldn't come off so I stuck them in entirely.
Seashell had cancer on her head and body, but I could take her head off so I was at least able to remove her tail.

After a couple hours, I went to check on them, and the cancer was fading a little bit from Seashell. I was routinely checking them for a few days afterwards, until I noticed a bit of tail rust forming on Dancing Butterflies. I decided enough was enough, and took all the ponies out.

So, after a couple days in really weak bleach solution, the cancer has faded a lot. But the cancer wasn't all that faded.
Dancing Butterflies' pink butterflies are now white.
She also has really bad tail rust.
4-Speed also developed tail rust.
But the worst is poor Seashell. Her mane has faded to a turquoise colour and no longer matches her tail at all! It's HORRIBLE!!

And I had heard so many good things about bleaching ponies!

Umm bleaching is meant for lighter colored and white ponies.. It is a big risk even on light colored and white ponies as well. And you always always always cut their heads off or boil water and loosen the glue cut their heads off and get their tails out.

Otherwise things get messed up.

But yes bleach is strong and should be taken lightly.

I've NEVER had bad results, I even put neat bleach inside ponys with rotted metal stoppers, this is unfortunate and I am sorry.

I'm so sorry to hear of your bad luck.

I've used neat bleach on all kinds of ponies before and never been unlucky enough to have an accident. I've even left them sitting in a bucket of bleachy water overnight before without a trouble. Maybe I need to be more wary, I always thought it was safe.

From what I see, I think the problem was you left them in for a couple of days. This gives the rust a chance to form, and the bleach a chance to lighten the hair and whatnot.

I've never heard of them being left that long, I wouldn't try it anyway as I'm sure I wouldn't make my solution weak enough and I'd have ponies with awful colored manes (I suck at getting the heads off *l*)

when I clean "new" ponies, I use a 1/3 bleach 2/3 water solution. I had a pan of it out and I accidently knocked Sunglory into it .. didn't find out for four days. Her hair and body are fine.

I've also tried bleaching a Lanyard pony from my childhood (he's brown, and I wanted him WHITE). I used pure bleach, submerged him, and left him out there for WEEKS. He's stil the same color. Hair didn't fade a bit either.

So.. I think with Dancing Butterflies and Sea Shell.. you just picked the worst ponies to bleach =/

Try washing the tails with shampoo and then conditioner, brush them, dry them and then repeat. If that doesn't take the rust away, there are chemicals that do the trick.. you just have to be very careful, because they aren't meant for plastic.

:(

That totally sucks. Sorry to hear about the bad luck.

But I've personally never heard of SOAKING a pony in anything, let alone bleach. And it's just a given that leaving the metal tail washer in water for a long period of time would form rust. For mold, you're probably better off boiling the pony. At least that won't fade hair or symbols. (Exceptions, of course - princesses, magic message, glitter, etc.)

Dipping the neck seam in boiling water will usually help loosen it so you can get the head off. That's a must for any cleaning steps. That washer HAS to come out.

Good luck. Poor Seashell. :(

I have personally bleached coloured ponies, including dark without problems.

I think the problem was that you left them in for days and the fact that you did not decapitate them. The bleach was neat and the ponies were in for 20 minutes.

I'm so sorry to hear that! :( I think you only should have let them boil in water and a little of bleach for some minutes, not leave them in the bleach for some days. And this treatment does not even really fade the cancer either, it only stops the spreading!

I'm sorry to hear that =( *hugs*

I tried a bleach once on the white ponies I had with cancer but NOTHING what so ever happend. That was a dissapointment.
So I ended up selling those and getting new, mint ones =P

I'm pretty lazy. When it's too much work I just replace it. I'm sure you can do the same with those 3 ponies. And I know SOMEONE will want to buy them. I have sold ponies with their feet chewed of. Since I'm a mint pony collector - don't ask me what kind of people buys them but I'm glad they do ;)

Yup, I'm with everybody else. The longest I've ever left ponies in bleach was for a few hours... not a few days. =/

Tail rust is pretty easy to get out though. You just have to remove the heads.

re

for tail rust i just use oxyclean/water solution to clean it up, it comes right off quickly. and bleach i only leave them in there for 15 to 20 minutes.

bleaching problems

I used to bleach all my rusty ponies, then scrub inside with an electric toothbrush.
Strangely, most of my personal collcetion never got rusty, so generally it was trades or sells that got bleached. Then one day I had an absolutely filthy North Star, so in she went.
When she came out, I scrubbed all the rusty gunk off. I had soaked her body and her tail but not her head, because the rust hadn't spread that far up inside her. When I put her head and tail back on, her tail had gone brittle and a shade paler than her mane, and her body hadn't faded, but it had lost its plastic sheen, and looked dull compared to her neck and head.
So I had to throw her away, becuase nobody was gonna buy her looking like that, and when I tried to paint her up as a custom, the paint peeled off her - it actually did. I was horrified to see her the morning after I'd painted her, she looked like she'd had sunburn
Now I soak my rusty girls in washing up liquid and water - its good for most rust stains and it even gets the rust out of the hair and gives the hair a decent shine as well.

Word of advise, if you are going to use toothpaste? Make sure its the whitening kind, not gel.
