Male Ponies?

So I remember that back in the 'old days' there were g1 male ponies the "big brother" and I think they were called something like happy family/loving family? That had bigger stockier male ponies with feathered hooves
Do the later generations have any male ponies? The only one I've seen was "Doctor Whooves" and that was a special collector's figure. Are there any regular male ponies?
One wonders where all the baby ponies come from haha.
:winkpony:

With G2 I think there are a couple, I'm not centred around those and as far as I'm aware they haven't got a seperate Mold.
G3 I don't think so, I'm not very sure with them.
G4 there was shining armour that was made in blindbag style, fashion style and brush able. Other then that I think there isn't any.

I just made a topic that could've easily been derailed due to exactly this, so I'll cut to the chase:

The first set of baby ponies, in the comics, was created when the ponies wished to have duplicates of themselves on a magic mirror. I'm sure someone else will link to the story. But yeah, the first baby ponies were essentially clones. Kind of cool, actually. It doesn't account for any baby that doesn't have "Baby Previously Released Pony" as its name, though, so the jury is still out on that one.

Now, for male ponies outside of G1:

G2 - Had a few, most famous of which is Clever Clover, by proxy of being included in the very first wave of standard ponies, and later was rereleased as a prince. Prince Firefly, Prince Fauna and Prince Blue Dream are others, not sure if there's any more. They didn't have unique molds, though, so the only reason a pony was a guy was because the backcard said so.

G3 - No male ponies whatsoever, not in the toyline nor the specials. The only male character in G3 was Spike, and he didn't have a toy.

G3.5 - YES! There are male ponies in G3.5, just not in the toyline! Look closely during crowd scenes in Twinkle Wish Adventure, and you'll see a few mussy short-haired, eyelashless ponies hanging around. Too bad none of them talks.

G4 - I'm guessing nobody needs to be told the show has that mostly covered ("mostly" being the key word here. I'm still hoping for a honest-to-goodness regular speaking male pony character). As far as the toyline goes, you've got the Funko Doctor Whooves, as you said, and the male pony blind bags. In the regular line, though, you've only got Shining Armor as a regular size and Fashion Style pony.

I think that pretty much covers it.

From what I've seen of the newer show (just the first season) the male ponies do mostly seem to be minor characters. The only named one that appears fairly frequently is Applejack's brother.
Would be nice if they'd release some of them in the toy line though.

and interesting about the clones of the bigger ponies. It's been a really long time since i saw/read any of that so it's faded from memory.

...Who doesn't even speak that often, and that trend continues throughout the show. I was pretty disappointed with that. To wit, anyone remember Codename: Kids Next Door? In the early drafts, one of the girls in the team only spoke Japanese, and the other was completely silent. They dropped that idea as soon as they realized the guys would be the only people who spoke normally. I find it very odd that the same thought never crossed FIM's writers' minds. I mean, you do have folks like Mr. Cake and the like, but they're mostly incidentals, and Shining Armor is a guest star at best.

And yeah, a lot of people would be happy if they just released more male ponies in the brushable line already. Actually, the brushable line as a whole has been little more than a disappointment, imho, but that's a whole different matter.

By the way, ladyEtaine, you can edit your posts if you want to add anything, you don't have to double-post. :winkpony:

Good to know about the editing. Still new here.
It is too bad there aren't proper male characters other than spike in the show, I guess there are a lot of programs aimed at males with few/no major female characters too but that doesn't really make it a good thing.
It's also a shame cos the first episode of friendship has an effeminate male dragon which was refreshing , I was hoping they'd keep up the trend. Oh well.
Yeah those male ponies were cool though, maybe people could contact the makers and ask for more? I am sure if they got enough feedback they might bring out a new line.

I think the absence of major male characters in FiM (the other series we're seriously lacking male characters) only seems large because it's so different from the norm where there's barely any female characters on a show. I might be in the minority, but I think there are plenty of important male characters in FiM and would hate to see a stronger male influence because I can get that pretty much anywhere else.

We have as recurring named male characters who do important plot related stuff:
Spike
Big Mac
Shining Armor
Discord

And male characters (that aren't the ones named above) playing important roles in many episodes, IE: Boast Busters, Dog and Pony Show, Over a Barrel, Sweet and Elite, Baby Cakes, Super Speedy Cider Squeezy, A Friend in Deed, Putting Your Hoof Down, Dragon Quest, Ponyville Confidential, MMMystery on the Friendship Express, etc

That's more than can be said for gender equality in most cartoons.

We're not talking about male characters here anyway, just male ponies, so Spike, Discord and any non-pony characters have no relevance to the matter at hand anyway.
Of the ones left, I still think it's a shame the only regular male pony character (Big Mac) barely talks, and the other (Shining Armor) is merely a guest star, i.e., relegated to a select few episodes. Not to mention there's this air of awkwardness whenever they enter the picture (which is very annoying imo). It's slowly getting better, but for a while just having a male pony say a line seemed like an event in itself. In that regard, characters like Mr. Cake and the Flim Flam Brothers are much better written, but guess what: they're not regulars.

I don't see a reason for this happening, especially since, unlike Transformers, with which Hasbro keeps consistency with the characters and such, with My Little Pony their main goal seems to be tear down the history of the franchise and begin anew (with a few bits taken from G3), so why not bet on the guy side of things as well? There's plenty of guys who like ponies, and I'm not even talking about bronies at this point.

You mention you'd hate it if FIM had a stronger male presence because you get that in other shows. Well, I hate it that any franchise has to, or come close to be gender-locked, and that goes both ways. I hate it that the Disney Princess line is so heavily female-oriented. I hate it that Transformers and Power Rangers pretty much ignore the female demographic. I hate it that nobody ever thought of making a Magical Girl team with a magical boy or two.

MLP to me is just jarring in this because it refers to an entire race of horses, and in FIM's case, it's made even worse because the existence of male ponies is clear. Let's put things in this perspective: Care Bears has more gender equality, both in the fiction and toylines. Care Bears.

As for other cartoons, that's a whole different topic, so I'm not going to discuss it.

Interesting stuff.
I do hope they add more male ponies to both the show and the toy lines at some point for the sake of variety- I had two of the male g1s back in the day ,just restored one of them and he's pretty much good as new just missing his hat (has his scarf though) but the other is sadly missing, hope he turns up .I loved them to bits. Like to see different types, sizes.
I also love the hoof-feathering that the male ponies had, you don't see that on any females far as I know, but it looks neat.

All the G2 ponies had feathers. There were a couple males in that gen, but as previously stated, they used the same molds.

G4 ponies in the show only have males with feathers, with males having a "draft horse" body sometimes. There's also males who don't have feathers and look the same as females except for a boxier muzzle. It's nice to see the different body designs that males can have, but females are stuck with the "normal" body or the "princess" skinny/model-looking body type.

I'd be surprised if Hasbro didn't make another pony with the playful pony male mold, as they've been super stingy with the number of molds this gen.

Not that familiar with g2s, thanks for the info. Having googled some pics, wow they look really different to other generations.
If I'd seen them without knowing what they looked like I'd have probably mistaken them for fakes.
Thanks for all the info!

We collect the cards and have 2 Prince Blueblood cards but I haven't seen him as a toy or anything. (I don't watch the show as intently as my daughter so I can't say I've seen him in the show, either.)

He's (Prince Blueblood) in the episodes leading up to the gala finale of S1, and he's in that as well... as Rarity finds out.. more about his personality. I've seen a few really great customs done of him, he'd look great as an official release.

We need a boys line. Heck, it could even be a big brothers line if you just went Shining Armor and Big Mac, lol! There's also Mr Cake, the wonderbolts (male and female) Snips, Snails, Time Turner, Braeburn... the list goes on of the possible boys they could use... or just make up some! They have so much they could do with the toy line - newborn cuties? The cake twins! Loving families - they've shown twilight, rarity and pinkie's parents... hasbro could make a few more molds and make a LOT more money - lots of ponies makes both the collecting, playing and brony communities happy! Collectors get lots of ponies to collect, little girls aren't saying to their parent's that they already have that one, and bronies get their fave characters. Simple!

I'd love a line of special packaged ponies, a special from each episiode.. say Nightmare moon from S1E1, then Luna from S1E2, then continue on, like collectors ponies. There's a line of 65 ponies right there.

does seem kind of silly that they're neglecting all those characters- pretty sure people would go for them.

Now I want to watch that G3.5 special to see the boy ponies. That just makes me like that line even more. lol. I think I smell a custom coming on. lol
