Can I Dye my Pony's Hair?

Hello

I recently bought a really nice G1 FlowerBelle! <3

From a very sweet seller on here too!!

Her body is perfect! Only factory flaw to her eye paint... and faded hair! That's it!

I was wondering if I can use rit dye on her hair? What color would you recommend to match her original pink?

Do you think it's even worth messing with?

And her eye... can I just lightly color it in with a black pen? Or paint?

Thanks xoxo

I would be apprehensive about the highlighter just because it might stain the body, your best bet is to get some RiT Petal Pink.
It's worth messing with if you want pink, I actually like her with the white so I'd leave her, but it's up to you.

I do customize here n there. Just cant rehair.. yet ;)

But I have used Sharpie permanent markers on some of my customs.

Here is a g4 Fluttershy I made into a "Galaxy Pony". Her hair was the original very light pink we see with Fluttershy. I used a black and a dark pink Sharpie to get the different colors in her hair. It's never stained or bled out. Even after being put into a zip lock back for several months. I sold few of these on ebay. They did good in shipping too!

I was thinking about doing this with Flowebelle's hair. Just find a light pink permanent Sharpie.

But... then again...I dont want to ruin her. She's far more valuable than a G4 custom which I can experiment with.

I might go with the rit dye.
...or just leave her be.

Wow :surprisepony: That's Something

As the others said, RIT dye is what you want ;) I would advise against Sharpie because it can bleed, fade, become sticky, not dry completely (as in you'll touch it later on and it'll come off in your hands and potentially stain your pony's body) and lead to a poor product over time. ;)

Rit makes a dye now called Rose Quartz that comes very close to the original fading pink hair colour. You can always go back into the roots with petal pink/tangerine blend and a comb to make it gradient.
It works for hair but not for bodies, so you can even make a few errors without ruining the pony. Have to use Rit Synthetic to dye the vinyl :)

Thanks for that good tip! I'm looking for a Wind Whistler this year and she's got white hair more often then not.

I repinked a bunch of ponies this week. But this is a perfect example of how quickly and easy it is to dye pony hair. None of these were in the dye for more than a few seconds.

(These pictures aren’t the greatest, all their names and tails actually match in colour and are slightly lighter than they photographed. I did 2 Steamers which is why there’s two here as well.)

Just lovely.

When you repink a ss, do you need to keep the dye from touching the flocking? How do you keep the body safe? @Skybreeze ?

They look beautiful!

I usually see petal/rose pink as the suggested shade for repinking ponies. Would this also be the right shade to use for a G3 Wing Wishes Minty? The walking pose one from the Dress Up Daywear line. My poor Minty is in need of repinking but I’m not sure if it’s the correct shade to use as I’ve never repinked before. I think she still has a thin stripe of pink in her tail but I can’t tell to compare

Did you just use Petal Pink or did you also add a tiny amount of Tangerine for this re-dying job?

@Tak - I haven’t yet done a so soft pony (my Wind Whistler really needs it). But I do know thanks to @Cactusflower that it absolutely dyes the flocking. I am looking at trying with a bait SS and by covering with cling wrap and tape. Then dying and drying. I’m always paranoid when dying hair of transfer on to the body.

@StormMaeker - Petal pink is a match for the “Fading pink” that was used by Hasbro. I can’t say for sure if it’s a match for your G3 as I am not a G3 collector and haven’t done much of anything with them. BUT petal pink is pretty safe, you can get a beautiful light pink to a very very dark pink. It just depends on how long you submerge the pony’s hair into the dye. My Wind Whistler was literally in for less than 3 seconds.

@IceCrystal - No. Mixing Tangerine isn’t needed if your comfortable with your timing. If I felt I needed a bit more dark, I would do another quick dunk. I plan on making either a photo tutorial or video once I’ve perfected a bit more. ;)

Thank you! I haven't had to use dye since we dyed the fabric for my sugar plum fairy tutu. lol

It’s really difficult to get a hold of now a days. Thanks to Covid it seems that everyone and their moms are doing tie dying and thus buying all the Rit dye stock. :(
