Easter Egg Coloring kits for dying ponies?

Has anyone ever tried using easter egg coloring kits and dying ponies the same way?

I am asking because I see this has galaxy egg dyes ( https://www.amazon.com/Galaxy-Egg-Easter-Dye-selling/dp/B079H4NZ63 ) and I am considering doing a galaxy themed custom based off another RP character of mine.

This particular kit has liquid dyes, not the tablets that you mix in water.

additionally, I wonder how well tablet dyes would work if you soak the pony in there. curious curious.

Ive never tried it,

but with my experience with eggs. I feel like the ponies would run or could rub off their colors, cause eggs always did that to me, no matter the color kit lol

I wonder if sealing it as you would with paint jobs would help prevent it from rubbing off?

Edit: I have a throw-away fakie that I can experiment on (the thing is destroyed but I can test it on the body and see). I have some dye from my job I can bring home to test it on.

I dont think it would stick. Its food coloring based dye, theres a good chance it wouldnt do anything. Ive seen videos of trying food coloring on dolls and it washes off.

Hmm worth a thought lol. Thanks for the feedback! Not worth trying then
Sorry there wasnt a better answer! Im sure theres a way you could do it with something else! Maybe you could dye the pony a base color and dab on galaxy colors of paint with a dry brush? Like barely any paint on it and just stipple it? Stippling is basically tapping the brush across the surface multiple times. I hope this helps somewhat! :purpleheart:

I love this idea so much but if this kit won't work maybe look for a synthetic dye. I wander if this would achieve the same look?? I have no idea if a fabric dye would stick to plastic?
S·E·I Galaxy Tie Dye Kit, Fabric Spray Dye, 8 Colors, (620119-MULTI) https://a.co/d/5o8wnP5

Hmm, that item you linked to says "other home decor projects", Im curious now if it would work on pony plastic.

I was thinking dry-brushing/stippling colors and gently swirl it with my fingers or something to try to achieve the effects with acrylic paints.

Tak- the wax crayon you mean? Interesting thought, I have no idea. That would look cool on the symbols!

Do you think the white crayon trick would work on ponies? Not that I’m ready to try dye, but curious.
That’s actually an interesting idea, as long as the crayon sticks to the pony I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I’ve done it on paper, canvas, eggs and wood so why not plastic?

No, the wax of a crayon can not only damage the pony especially with heat added to it from the hot water required for dying.

However, masking fluid does work very well and is my go to for keeping things tidy on my customs now a days.

I’ve seen some results from masking fluid. Is that something you find at a craft store? Would it keep twinkle eyes safe?
It should but I haven’t personally tried a TE yet. And yes, craft stores and Amazon sells it. ;) I like the Windsor & Newton masking fluid for MLP.

I don't think an egg coloring kit will cut it since the dye is probably food coloring based. Rit dye for synthetics would probably be a better choice.

I'm pretty sure @MonsterIceCream was experimenting with dyeing ponies?
I've been summoned, sorry for the late reply! My immediate answer is 'you don't know until you try', but my gut is telling me that Easter egg dye sets are probably not strong enough to penetrate into pony plastic deeply enough to become permanent. You may be able to use them to some extent with white nylon hair, but I do worry they might fade into nothingness over time. My concern would be that the dye would fade and look more like stains instead of a nice color.

For a galaxy style dye job, I would personally recommend Rit Dyemore for synthetics (not just 'Rit Dye', it has to have the Dyemore in the title), but I've also heard that iPoly synthetic dye on Amazon works for vinyl also. I would suggest taking off the head, then dip-dying the body into a boiling pot of dye from various angles, much like dip-dying an Easter egg, to achieve the galaxy type effect. You could also experiment with soaking cotton balls or rags in dye, and laying them over the pony in patterns. The dye will take longer to set if you're not applying heat as well, so I recommend leaving them overnight. (Alternatively, heat gun?)

I have experimented with hot glue as a dye resist, and it worked extremely well; however, the heat from my dye boiling re-melted the hot glue, and it spread onto other ponies when it melted onto my tongs, as well as gummed up my dye pot. I would suggest boiling the dye, then pouring it off into a heat-safe container before you add a pony into it, or simply try it with a lukewarm or even cold dye pot. I have not tried it with the masking fluid listed above, but that's going to be a future experiment! I would love to find an easy, simple dye masker for ponies.

Best of luck to you! :rainbow:
