I have quite a few brush and grow ponies and they're all in pretty alright condition , but they could use a wash and a bit of help with the hair. The braided beauty doesn't really balance well and i need to clean her more in depth clean however I've never so much as taken the heads off a brush n grow pony and I'm TERRIFIED to. I'm also afraid of damaging the mechanism with boiling water or if there's any parts that would rust? If there's anyone that knows how they work and could reassure me it'd be greatly appreciated!

Here's a few posts about BnG's that should help you out:
See my post here complete with photo's of a BnG I restored.
Point three is for BnG here, I also linked a video here too.

Short answer to long story, is that you can restore them but not without breaking the top bit of the mechanism that secures the head. The mechanism absolutely has some metal bits to it that will rust. I suggest just a good surface scrubbing with them and not to submerge into water, also to ensure you've got the hair out all the way when shampooing and leave it for at least a full week to dry as you don't want any moisture in the tail to get cranked into the mechanism and still end up rusting and possibly starting molding process.
