So... I love bugs, I think theyre gorgeous wonderful little things (aside from the blood suckers :hmph:). However I have a bad phobia of loooong legs. So as such, i cant handle katydids or large grasshoppers bc long legs that can jump at me. So, while I do think Katydids and Grasshoppers are beautiful miraculous not so little things I want to learn about... I cant look at them for long without dry heaving and shaking my arms in a panic haha.
So.. There was this massive grasshopper on my porch the other day. It was sitting on top of a gallon paint can and was half the length of the lid. A little longer than my palm. Bright green with dark green/maybe black stripes down its back sort of? It gave the appearance of a bright green back stripe since it was dark on either side of the back. It was gorgeous but naturally I watched it from inside my screendoor and didnt look directly at the legs lol. My cat tried to grab it and I had to rush out to defend it and distracted my cat long enough it flew away, which also resulted in me screaming bloody murder running away myself lol.
I really wanna know what kind of grasshopper (or katydid, im supicious it may be a weird variety of that since it has long antenna and sometimes katydids are called longhorn grasshoppers for that reason) it is but I cant google it. Ive tried i cant handle scrolling its too much. Does anyone have any idea what kind of grasshopper/katydid it is? I live in the far south eastern US.
My mom is a bug expert but even she didnt know weve never seen one of these before to our knowledge unless weve completely forgotten. We've been so busy she hasnt had time to research it either.
You can post pictures just put under a spoiler so i can prepare myself  these are the best pics i could get from a distance if it helps at all i cant even look at the picture close lol

Ok I'm no fan of bugs I have a love and hate relationship as long as a bug stays far away from me and doesn't touch me I'm okay but I do enjoy taking pictures of bugs
this is the second time I've ever encountered a stick bug here's a leaf bug as well and a spider

GASP!! You saw a walking stick?!:hearteyes: I havent seen one since I was like.. 6 years old! Ive only seen that one. Its beautiful omg so lucky to have seen two !! I totally understand that, I lovee bugs, love taking pictures of them but as long as specific ones dont touch me im good. Otherwise im screaming lol.
I love spiders <3 theres a family of cellar spiders in my bathroom lol i name them. Steve the cellar spider is my home skillet biscuit lol my lil dude. just dont touch me, air fist bumps only.

I love bugs! My rl friend was here a couple weeks ago and she had a praying mantis in her hair when we came in from the backyard. Then yesterday I was waiting to pick up E from school, a grasshopper jumped into my through the open window and landed on my arm! Then it jumped back out like ‘oh poo!’ as Wesley noticed it. There was a huge praying mantis in the Safeway bakery on night at closing, too.

Omg!! Praying Mantids are one of my favorites!! :happyhearts: Haha How big was the one in her hair? Thats so cute! I would have freaked a lil but stayed still so I didnt hurt it.
Yesterday a tiny spider crawled down the wall next to me and i shined my phone flashlight on it just to make sure it wasnt a brown recluse (it wasnt). It was so cute It covered its face with one leg and stretched out another like yoURE BLINDING ME WHATS HAPPENING  so i moved the flashlight lol

That is too funny about the spider.
The one in my friend’s hair was so little! Only 1-2 inches. Then there’s this spider in the doorway we never use (to out back). I figured it was perfect for the season, but I don’t squish bugs, insects, arachnids, etc, unless they are extremely obnoxious (mosquitoes), or dangerous and can’t be relocated outside. I woke to a scorpion on the wall a few feet from my head and didn’t flip out… I think it’s because my biological sister is a ‘freak out and jump onto furniture whilst screaming get it get it get it!’ Type.

Alright, so with a little bit of googling it looks to me like that little guy was an American Bird Grasshopper or American Bird Locust. I’m gonna include a pic in the spoiler thing incase you don’t actually wanna see it :) (which I totally get btw, we had a weird spider in the house and I wanted to make sure it’s not like poisonous but all the images of spiders kept popping up  and I couldn’t search anymore)

For the most part, I kinda hate bugs ^^; Like I can tolerate them if they’re outside, ya know, that’s their space so whatever. But they almost all gross the hell out of me, especially spiders, bee like ones (wasps, hornets, those horrible big orange ones that live in the ground), and anything that buzzes in my ear.
There are a couple I like though :) Butterflies are super pretty and I’ve had them land on my hand before which made me feel like a Disney princess haha, also beautiful Luna moths, ladybugs are cool (had one chilling in the corner of my room for months and left it a few leaves and a bottle cap of water) also inchworms, fuzzy caterpillars, and grasshoppers are all ones I’m ok with. From a distance dragonflies are really pretty but I don’t like them near me cause they’re big. Aaand that’s it, I am not a bug person lol (seriously even a few bug Pokémon creep me out, I’m like misty)

That’s really cool that you found out what it was! I’m sorry I didn’t put my picture in a spoiler.

Thank you so muchh!!! I wouldnt have guessed it was a locust, I thought their Antenna were shorter than that but youre totally right!! :D <3 Thats so cool! I wonder why we havent seen more of them if theyre native to the southeast. This one was an absolute unit lol had to be a bit bigger than the usual 2 something inches.

Ohh, do you mean brown recluse or black widow? An easy tip to help identify without googling. Brown recluse spiders are also called fiddle back spiders. They have a brown fiddle shape on their head/back area. The base of the fiddle shape is at their eyes, the neck of the fiddle is pointed towards their butt. Black widows always are shiny/glossy black with red under its belly. If there's no red its not a widow. Also if theres no red and has white on it somewhat like a white skull pattern its a false widow. However best to just not touch it anyway im not fully sure if false widows are safe.

No problem! Yeah I wouldn’t have thought locust either cause I thought they were a little different :) he does sound pretty huge, I wouldn’t have wanted to get too close either haha
Heh I definitely don’t look at spiders long enough to know what color their belly is or anything and I definitely don’t touch any of them ^^; (although a skull patterned spider almost sounds cool) but no this one was kinda green which seemed unusual so that’s why I was searching for it but had to give up.

Haha i feel you! I love spiders but I wouldnt dare touch them. Id freak out haha. That said Daddy Long Leg spiders scare me so bad bc long leg phobia, those I scream and run just seeing them!
Was it bright or dull green? Maybe i could return the favor and figure out what kind it was for you? <3 What was the size and bodyshape? Was it on a web?

One of my favorite spiders is a goldenrod spider
They have clearish smokey yellow legs and head, then a bright sunny yellow butt! Theyre teeny tiny and loveee living on wildflowers, especially daisies which match their color. Theyre so beautiful <3 Sometimes they have smokey white legs and pale yellow butt or smokey white legs and a white and rose pink butt!!

I worked at petco back in the days of yore… lol. It was necessary to handle bugs (bagging live crickets takes a certain technique) and all the creatures sold to live in terrariums. Honestly… the birds creep me out more than scorpions or tarantula. It’s the dinosaur in their eyes….

Well you can try :D but I didn’t take any pictures like you did. It wasn’t a bright green, kinda like moss or algae on a rock color, had a chunky body and shortish legs and was probably only a little bigger than a typical ladybug. I didn’t get a great look at it cause, well I didn’t want to lol, but also cause it was on the ceiling. We had to use a stool and an empty juice bottle to capture him.
Pink, white and yellow does sound cool, for a spider :winkpony:
@Tak good to know not to ever work at a pet store! Haha I would love taking care of the mice, hamsters, bird and ferrets but tarantulas? Never! :surprisepony: And I wouldn’t wanna handle crickets either. You don’t like any birds or just the bigger ones?

I’m not sure … a turkey ran at me when I was 3 (4?), we always had chickens, too, and they were ok. I lived with a rather neglected parrot and it was obnoxious. Mean, too. The littler birds don’t bother me, but my cats always wanted to eat then. Something about the side eye…

:surprisepony: Turkey’s are pretty big, that does sound scary for small child
Too bad about the parrot, I always thought it would be cool to have one cause they can talk :)

Ooo theres a good chance it was a common house spider then, they have pretty chunky bodies and short legs. Unless a crab spider somehow got in but crab spiders prefer being in plants you never see them inside.:winkpony:

Lol the dino in their eyes! I love birds but im scared of being bitten by parrot like birds or large birds. Im terrified to lose a finger, or at least a chunk! o_O So i dont blame you for being scared.

oh? I’ve never seen a green one before but it could’ve been. Probably not the plant one though, there’s only 2 plants in our house and not near where he was

Hmm did it have striped legs or a solid color? :0 Vermont has shamrock spiders, but they have striped legs.
