G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide

I don't like how the bow is on elastic.
I have found my taking out the thread from the stitching, you can untie the ribbon. I took off the entire elastic when taking it off my Gusty and then the thread just came out itself and the ribbon untied, so I was able to attach it to my custom like a normal bow

That’s probably the best idea. These elastics degrade over time. All the elastics of the same material used in G3s are completely degraded and falling apart.

i actually had to do that!! i got a retro butterscotch from a thrift store recently and i was excited that she still had her bow intact, but somehow it broke so i just had to tie it. it looks better on the elastic though in my opinion because theres just so little ribbon, if you tie it on the tail it looks even shorter. but also i always give my ponies huuuge tail ribbons lol </3

I did the same thing with mine! Soooo much better.

Yeah, me too. I got a Sunny Daze recently with a couple of accessories including a cape, and as soon as I went to gently take the cape off to give her a needed spa day the elastic just started to disintegrate. The cape no longer has a "cape" shape, I'll probably modify it to turn it to a cape again, myself.

Oh.... I actually like the unicorn plushies suddenly. o_o Had they had those horns before? I completely didn't notice them if they did, but I weirdly like that they've gone kinda classic unicorn with those horns. And Glory's colors look so vibrant! I wonder how much of that is just the photo editing.

I like the new packaging for the collector ponies!

Ah, poor collector's pose :,D Honestly I kinda feel it too, but on the other hand, I get why they'd keep re-releasing them.

The first time they ever made the retro collectors ponies was with the 25th anniversary, during G3. I remember pretty clearly, seeing them on the shelf and begging my mother to get them for me, and only barely managing to get her to agree to it. It was a really big deal for me when I saw the original six ponies standing before me for the first time. As a young collector those were my first ever G1 ponies and it was a big deal for me to get the ones that started it all, even if I did later realize they were remakes.

Originally wasn’t so sure about the plushies, now I’m having second thoughts… so soft… must cuddle.

That is awesome and I’m glad you had that experience. I wonder how many others did too and how their sales fared with the remade 35th anniversary editions.
I think I’m mostly worried that they are gauging our interest in pony re-releases on how well these earlier year editions do. The nostalgia market is a strong one, but at the moment they’re missing out on customers like me who would buy a remake of a pony because I haven’t been able to collect the old version or can no longer find one in nice condition. (The only BFs I have bought are Sweet Stuff and Gingerbread, just to see them looking bright and new again.)
I can imagine some collectors might be mad if a remake drives down the price of a rare pony, but for me, when I see Rapunzel going for over $900 on a current eBay auction, I think “it would be so nice if more of us could own her.” It’s a tough call.

Ah, yeah, definitely. Personally speaking even I don't really want to collect the original six over and over again. As important as getting them the first time was, it's definitely not my favourite pose and I'm not sold on getting an army of any of these particular ponies. Minty is a big maybe.

I feel you on a lot of this though. I adore rares, and when they're in my hands I want them to stay rare but when they're not sometimes I want any access to them I can get. I'm on record here already for saying that I would love to see remakes of the Tales characters, and I don't remember it was me or not but the celestials got mentioned then too. Remakes, and especially improvements, to a lot of the G2 ponies would be welcome as well. There's honestly just so many good options for remakes.

I want my collectors pose ponies to be originals and am working through finding them all cos its fun! :blue::blossom::minty::butters::snuzzle::cc:

I'm just tired of them constantly re releasing the same thing. Birthday pony reboot might have been cool...

We do not talk about my Peachy army... >.>

Seeing as original Peachy is so common, maybe Basic Fun don’t want to go overkill on her because there’s already so many in the world? Soon, there will be as many Original Six as there is Mane Six.

A variation on Birthday Pony would be cool indeed, maybe different colours! They could have done Birthday Pony as Anniversary Pony instead. The French for “birthday” is “anniversaire”… come on, Basic Fun

Have you come cross a Basic Fun Peachy yet in your army?

I have not, but they released her with a new parlour :O
