G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide

I had no idea. Good to have a community to educate those that didn’t know!
Heckyeahponyscans on Tumblr mentioned they were customs but I had to hunt down who they actually were. Now that I'm home I can show a comparison between the listing photos and CustomsbyPandabear's photos:

Anyway, I would wait until we hear something more official.

I can't seem to find it myself but wow I'm so excited!!

I love the names but it only names three, and then later it says "there are four unique ponies to collect"?
I commented on this back in September when we saw photos from, I’m not sure, a show? A con? It’s around page 52 if you haven’t seen them. But I mentioned how all the other sets from Basic Fun were released in sets of 4. My guess is that Basic Fun is purposely not releasing any info about the mysterious number 4 to keep us anxiously waiting and hyped for their release. Silly BF, we are already there but I guess they don’t know.

Celestial Ponies now seen on Amazon, though listed Out of Stock- I'd post links but I am not sure if I am allowed to. Seems to be on US Amazon presently at $14.99 each, 3 styles. Nova, Polaris and Aurora

About this item

  • Since the 1980’s, My Little Pony has delighted children with the magic of friendship. Now you can join My Little Pony in celebrating 40 years of play with the NEW 40th Anniversary Celestial Ponies!
  • 4-INCH RETRO FIGURES There are four unique ponies to collect, each 4-inches in size.
  • 40TH ANNIVERSARY COMB Comes with a commemorative 40th Anniversary comb. Use the comb to brush your pony’s long, beautiful hair!
It’s very odd that there’s three names. What happened to “Milky Way”? Are they still deciding or did the third party know enough about ponies to think “hmm… that’s already a pony”? I’m remembering this post

Aside from the typo, that is a perfect, adorable shelf to store them on. Now I'm gonna have to actually find them in person so I can snag that packaging, too. XD I swear they did not need to go this hard for the 40th anniversary I am NOT PREPARED

Anxiously waiting for the 40th anniversary ponies to come to my neck of the woods...
Me tooo, I checked both of my local Meijer's yesterday. At least my normal one has a shelf tag for them $10.99 instead of $9.99 but I can live with that!
I had amazon giftcards so I just plum ordered the plushies, still waiting on firefly to show up but both unicorn girls have the 40th tags on them.

Simply gorgeous!!!

I think the marbled patterning is probably paint, similar to the stripes on the Colorswirl ponies. I think it would be hard to get plastic marbling that "thin" with that kind of plastic. Just a guess, though. The HQG1C custom project produced a few prototypes with marbled vinyl and the results were very splotchy.

I kinda with the star antenna things were personalized to each one, but they looks very nice

I'm honestly a little...disappointed? I know the mythical status of this set is inevitably going to lead to disappointment at them not living up to expectations, but I feel like these are a little boring for what they should be; the very short manes especially, but also some of the coloring is a little darker and more vibrant than I expected for a celestial-themed collection while I would have expected more pastels (more in line with the concept art), maybe some shimmer or tinsel or something. Polaris' coloring is especially disappointing. You can barely see the swirls with such a light blue body!

I also hate Tootsie pose and wish they went with a different one for those two, but that's just me lol

I thought the original artwork had tinsel or sparkles or clear bodies or something? I feel the same way you do, and the colour schemes aren't very inspiring :/

It's just an incredibly bare-bones interpretation of a line that would have come out in years 9-10 if they had actually been made by Hasbro, closer to a Year 4 pony in Year 9 cosplay when they should be more on the level of Glow n Show, Rockin' Beats or Flower Fantasy imo :/ It's really strange that they didn't push for the highest level of extravagance, considering this collection is pretty much solely aimed at MLP collectors instead of children and nostalgic adults who otherwise don't collect ponies lol

Pandabear's customs, however, are a pretty flawless interpretation that would absolutely fit in those years while still standing out on their own merits!

The magenta pony is great though! Not incredibly elaborate but definitely the most fully-realized of the set imo

You aren't the only one that's a bit disappointed. I had hoped there would be more for this, considering they aren't remakes of existing ponies. so much could've been done and to me, it's the same as all others with a headpiece attached. Tinsel, longer hair, glitter bodies, even sparkly or glow headpiece would've made this stand out nicely. I probably won't go out of my way to purchase these, but if I happen to see them in my travels I might get it.

I agree @Serena-Hime , it does look like they’re missing a bit of sparkle. What would you expect from celestial themed ponies? Sparkle, something that’ll twinkle like the stars in the sky. I am expecting to see someone put tinsel in the manes when they release…

But I would probably still get them anyway. Since they’re the prototype pictures I am so hoping there will be one last shiny change. Thst may not happen though…

Has Basic Fun actually released any tinsel ponies yet?

You know, I don't think they have! :O

Maybe BF just doesn’t like tinsel and thinks “well, collectors have found tinsel on ponies quite annoying in the past so let’s not do that!”

EDIT: I’ve just seen Aurora and Polaris on Amazon UK but not the other two listed yet.

I've never been a fan of ponies with plastic doodads permanently affixed to them, though I learned to accept flutter pony wing mechanisms and Princess medallions, because wings are awesome, and Princess Ponies are too. So I don't collect Happy Tails, Dance & Prance, Precious Pocket, Secret Surprise, or Ballerinas. Though I knew to expect them, I'm staring at the star sprays on their heads and immediately wanting to replace them with beads on some springy fishing line or something like that. All together, they're a nice color palette, but they do feel very bare-bones as @Serena-Hime said. If I ran across one I would be tempted to use as a custom body and spruce it up.

Aurora looks gorgeous..! :purpleheart:
