G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide: CELESTIAL PONIES and 40th Anniversary

Aaaah I love them! Time to star a basic fun repro shelf I guess

Every additional special feature adds to the cost. At the Texas Toy Show the BF rep mentioned this set would cost $15 (like the Twinkle Eyes) due to the extra production cost for the swirls. Why would they want to up the cost even more, and for features that aren't even shown on the backcard? The backcard doesn't show ponies with extra long hair or pearly or glittery bodies. (The one surviving vintage prototype also has a matte body.)

Whether you intend to buy the Celestial ponies or not, I hope you understand and appreciate the enormity of what their production means. The only reason they exist is that MLP fans wrote into Basic Fun and begged for these ponies, and Basic Fun listened. Making this set is a big risk for Basic Fun, which typically makes sets rooted in nostalgia. The general G1 MLP brand is nostalgic, but no one, literally no one, had the Celestial ponies when they were kids. Will this gesture of appreciation for and faith in the MLP community pay off? Or will this set be a flop? Only time will tell. If the set flops then I would not expect BF to pay much heed to future collector requests.

Personally I think they look awesome. :)

That makes perfect sense and I completely forgot all about what would be in additional costs! I also wasn’t aware of TE prices either. Thank you for mentioning it :Flutter4:

I sure hope this set doesn’t flop

I'm super excited for these, it's like a new release when I was a kid. I hope they don't get scalped up and resold at exorbitant prices.
Yeah, that worries me too. I was only able to snag two TEs in the wild. And they were from a reseller booth! It was cheaper than paying shipping, but still :/

This is true! I understand how toy production and costing works, but that doesn't mean I can't think they're not as elaborate as they should be, that the Tootsie pose was a choice that I don't like, that the hair is too short, that Polaris' markings are nearly invisible to the point of looking nonexistent or that their designs are the most basic interpretation that they could have possibly gone with.

I can also be disappointed that they went with decals for the swirls (you can see certain parts of the stock images that have small defects in the swirls, likely a result of decal warping if I have to guess- or perhaps it's that hydro-grip decal method?) when some of the prototypes at the Texas Toy Show had stencil-sprayed swirls, which is a much less common painting method these days and therefore more expensive, but a method I would have preferred and would have set them apart from other swirl-ed lines.

And also, fwiw, that Surprise Pose prototype also has a long mane and tinsel in her hair, and the colors on the backcards (which I would have preferred because they're closer to pastels) are also not the same as the BF versions. And I wouldn't say the backcard hair length is an indication that the real ponies must have short hair, considering a lot of the longer-haired ponies have shorter hair in the artwork!

If you love them, great! I'm glad their interpretation works for you, and it's great that BF listened so closely to fans who kept writing to them to make this line.

I like them (love the Magenta one) but I think they could have been much better, and I would have been fine with paying 20$ per pony if I had to! The SDCC Majesty retailed for 20$ and had way more detailing than I would have wanted for these, so I don't think it would have been too much of an ask for them to have longer hair or slightly different colors or a pearl finish on the body.

Tootsie pose sucks, but, they are not THAT plain, and it is not like people would want to pay price of a custom for one...

Didn't see one posted here yet so here's an image of the ACTUAL BF ponies, courtesy of g3toys.uk. Kinda bummed they only used 2 poses but what can ya do.
From left to right, top to bottom we got: Aurora, Nova, Polaris and Milky Way.

Is that tinsel I see in Polaris' mane?

Ooh, I think you're right.
I see what you were seeing but it wouldn't make sense for them to only put it in one pony's hair. I do think it's interesting the idea of only having it as a stripe in the mane rather than blended throughout!

Fortunately for me, I like the Tootsie pose (when the head is turned properly to one side.. it doesn't lend itself well to the posable head option). I'm getting used to them and maybe it would be fun to get them and spruce them up with some custom features. I wonder how hard their plastic is going to be.

This pose looks fine if you angle the pony so the foot is not visible :p

*remembers finding out firsthand how awkward Sweetberry pose is, and how I had to hide my near-fave pony's legs behind smaller toys*

A lot of poses have their ups and downs.

What is it you don't like about Tootsie's foot? It's a little long compared to her other front leg but as far as G1 pony anatomy goes it's pretty decent.
Are you talking about G2 or G3 Sweetberry?

You know how there are fakies that use copied Tootsie pose body and whatever heads? I got these before any legit MLP, so perhaps it is a sense of "uncanny valley" of proper pony head near that foot XD

G1 Strawberry Fair, I mixed names up ><'

Oh, that could help explain it! I feel that way a little bit about the HQG1C ponies that did head swaps to make "new" poses. "Something is off, here.." But really it's just because I'm SO used to the original poses.

Strawberry Fair/Sugarberry? I like her pose too! :lolpony: To me she looks like she's doing a lazy canter and there's some forward motion.
