G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide

Hey all,

So, since i was absent, could someone please explain what's the situation with the Classic G1 ponies? Like which are next, and when?
By the way has anyone tried to contact Basic Fun and ask them? :)

Glad the Twinkle Eyes will be on Amazon as well.

I never had gone to Cracker Barrel until I saw this post! I went to the one we have in Salt Lake City and they had the heartthrob/gusty wave. I was kinda hoping for the posey/lickety split wave .. but nah. I really hope other retailers apart from Cracker Barrel get the TE wave.
Same! I went to Cracker Barrel nearest to me about a week ago, and they had the same wave. They had a few Surprises, Gustys, and Sparklers (with the correct hair, no red in the tail). They were priced at $12.99 each, I believe. I didn't get any because I saw all those at Targets.

Nope looks my target only has a few pony life toys, none of the retros. There isn’t even a shelf tag
My Target clearanced out all the remaining G1 ponies back in February, and I of course haven't seen any since. I never did find the unicorns or Seashell or Bubbles. The last sets they had at my Targets were the Gusty/Sparkler/Heart Throb/Surprises. I ended up picking up a Heart Throb on clearance for $4.99 for my niece.

Well, we were really hoping to see some G1 flutter ponies, they even showed up at the toy fair in ... 2019 I think? I'm not sure what happened with that, but it looks like we won't be getting them. I am sure other people who have been around/paying attention know way better than me though. I've been pretty MIA. By the way, great to see you! I remember you back from 2006!

But the cool thing is they are apparently coming out with Twinkle Eyes this Fall- at 2 US stores, one is Cracker Barrel, and one is called Meijer or something like that. I think they mention it a few pages back. I believe MustBeJewel and some others have been in contact with Basic Fun and that's how they know we're no longer getting Flutters, and that there will be 4 TEs.
Glad the Twinkle Eyes will be on Amazon as well.
Oh my gosh, they will? Where did you hear this? That's great news if so! Luckily I have a Cracker Barrel so I can hope to snatch them up when they come out! I'm so excited to see them!

@SoSoftClaire

The uh, translation is a little wonky. But it stands to reason, that if its coming to DE Amazon, then they must be coming to other Amazon's too.

Hey, glad that I am back :)

Do we know which 4 TE ponies will be?

Mario~

I just wanna say thanks for this guide! I know when I eventually have the space for more ponies I will definitely get into collecting these for their vibrant, pristine hair & bodies. I hope Basic Fun keeps making these and does original ponies too!

Are there any photos of the new ponies or are the names just the only confirmed ones at the moment?

I have a question. So I do remember at some point (maybe around the time when G3's were still on the shelves or perhaps sometime much later...) that there was a set of "retro ponies" for some anniversary. This was long before Basic Fun ponies. My question is that if I found, say, Parasol at a garage sale or flea market and I could tell she wasn't original due to the harder plastic, but couldn't tell right away if she was Basic Fun or not...what is the easiest way to tell? Is the brand stamped on the hoof? I've since gifted all my BF's to my niece so I have none for reference.

They made a 25th anniversary set. The hooves are marked 2007. They aren't basic fun, but they're not the originals.

Okay, yes. That makes sense. Thanks very much! I'd love to see a comparison/review between all three versions eventually.
This thread has some pictures

The first anniversary set of ponies had darker colors on some of them, and smaller eyes. Dunno about the plastic.

Butterscotch has yellow hair in the most recent anniversary set, instead of brown, and the collector ponies don't have blush.

The rainbow set has two variations of scented and non-scented, after collectors complained about discoloration.

The stripes are a little wider on the unicorns, and Sparkler has stripes in her tail, unlike the original.

Not sure about any differences in the second set earth ponies and pegasus?
