I just thrifted a Beach Belle, but her hair was a tangled mess! I’ve finished cleaning her up, but she has a frizz problem now! I want to try fixing her with heat, but I’ve not done that on a g3 ponies before.

Does anyone know her hair type? I know nylon is more heat resistant than other hair types used on toys, but I don’t want to risk melting it if it’s not nylon.

I would be very careful with her because the "Heart Throb pink" hair color in G3s is known to become very brittle and snap off/disintegrate. I mean, you did thrift her, so it's not like you're losing a couple hundred bucks if you don't intend to sell her. But she is still rare/sought after, so I would practice on other G3s before her. Use LOTS of conditioner and don't hold the straightener in one place for extended time. Another method is to use a fabric steamer basically the same way.

I would also recommend using the lowest heat setting on your hair straightener, I use the setting on mine thats around 200 F degrees. I usually do very quick swipes, dont let it stay on the hair stationary. Always quickly moving, be sure to have the hair coated in as much conditioner as you can. It wont hurt the straightener to use a ton of conditioner. The conditioner will bubble on the hair straightener, that's fine, just remember quick strokes! :winkpony: :twohearts:

I would personally start by slathering her hair in conditioner and very slowly and patiently work on detangling from the ends to the roots, so to speak. Always be careful not to pull hard or you might break the hair. Just slow and steady until the knots and snarls are brush-able.

At that point I'd giver her hair a good rinse in warm water just to remove any debris or dirt that you loosened up while brushing.

Then I would do just as @starbritesprinkles said:

This is my method now, and once I went with the fabric steamer I would never go back to a flat iron, personally. The steam helps the hair stay moist, so less chance of burning or breaking. I'd put a hefty amount of conditioner in the hair and comb through it, then use the fabric steamer against it in sections.

I haven't uploaded my video for the fabric steamer yet, but other tutorials about dealing with frizzy hair can be found in our Tutorials section: https://www.mlptp.net/index.php?threads/how-do-i-get-rid-of-frizzy-hair.115774/

Thank you all for the advice! I’ll have to look for that “heart throb” pink on another g3 that isn’t so rare to test on so I don’t ruin her.

I knew she was rare, but hundreds of dollars for her? I’m a bit nervous to touch her now honestly. I haven’t decided if I will keep her or not. I was surprised to find her in a goodwill.com auction lot this week, and more surprised when I was the only bidder.

She may have a tail trim, but it’s hard for me to know how long it is with how puffy the hair is right now. In any case she was obviously loved by a child & that does make me happy.

I would not have thought to use a fabric seamer, but that sounds less dangerous than an iron. I will definitely look into that.

I do have a box of thrifted g3 ponies so I think I will start testing techniques on a few common ones.

Thanks again, I’ll try to post my progress as I go if people are interested in that.

i would love to see the progress! you have some amazing luck. you wouldn't wanna know how much i paid for my beach belle (with her accessories) :lolpony: i don't check goodwill auctions much since i frequent so many other ecommerce sites, but its clear goodwill auctions have some hidden gems sometimes...

I've seen her average around $100 or so, personally, though the market is always fluctuating. Here's the most recent ebay ended listing that includes her and her counterpart, Caribbean Delight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284764388436

As long as you're careful and gentle, you should be ok. ;)
