I am finally bringing my ponies back out after 11 years in storage. They smell so vinyl-y. You know what I mean. So many of them are aged-vinyl-sticky. Do I need to wash each one? Is there a way to do it more quickly? I have about 500 to go through.

Is the strong offgassing dangerous?

It sounds like you have plasticizer leakage. You'll need to go through and pull the ones that are sticky/greasy and give them a wash. After that you'll have to quarantine them from the rest of the ponies until they stop leaking. They may need multiple baths before they stop. AFAIK there's no way to stop this process. You'll know they're done when the vinyl goes hard.

My go to for smells would be to put them somewhere they can air out for a few days like a garage or sunroom. Sunlight is great for getting rid of funky smells. If you have an air purifier that might help too.

I wouldn't recommend submerging them all at once tho. I'd be afraid of them developing tail rust, unless you're going to remove the heads on all of them so they can fully dry after. Just wash the ones as needed. The rest you can wipe down with a damp cloth or wet wipe.

I'm dying to know where your shelves are from, they look so fancy! :O
