I have a confession to make friends...

I have been a member of the TP for 12 years, which is about how long I have had my childhood collection in my possession...

:speedy:

Never have I ever gone through and actually CLEANED all my ponies.

-hides in shame-

Of course I have washed all the ponies I've purchased in lots, etc, as an adult collector. Assessed who stays in the herd and who gets sold on. So in doing that, I have washed some of the childhood herd in order to compare doubles and such. But I have never gone through and systematically washed every pony I've owned.

Y'all. There were a few years after my parents' divorce that the pony bin was stored in the barn.

So! I have made it one of my summer goals to wash at least 5 ponies every day! I have started with the ones I know I'm listing for sale (doubles from the collection included) and then will be going through the entire herd. I figure this is a good way to put my hands on every pony and make the decision of whether I want to keep it, or if it's time to thin down to just the precious ones that are sentimental.

And that means, I'm going to be sharing what strange or funny things (at least to me) that I come across as I go!

Yesterday I pulled out two ponies who have had their hair in tiny braids for at least 2.5 decades... This is not pretty, guys. Brace yourselves.:sundancetaf:

The last time I likely played with my ponies' hair had to have been before 1997 (yes, I'm old. Shush!) ... so, what... probably actually 1995... making this the result of 27 years of braided hair while stored or displayed in all sorts of climates across Oregon, Idaho, New Mexico, Washington, Michigan, Idaho (again), and Arizona.

I will share how they look after their spa treatment. :surprisepony:

I can imagine how this hair must feel for the ponies after you took the hair out, it must feel so weird for them :sundancetaf:

Who is the second pony? I actually quite like how the mane and tail look

Haha Awww!! No shame here!! I had my childhood ponies for a longgg time before I cleaned them when I was in highschool and i still noticed the other day one of them has tail rust i have to fix.. :surprisepony: I cant believe I never noticed! Its easy to not think about it when youve always been used to your childhood ponies being a certain way! Excited to see the before and after!!

Tootie Tails? She is a tropical G1. We always called her Tootie Fruitie as kids because her real name was so silly.
Tootie Fruitie is a great name for a pony, I just had to look her up and it matches her symbol a lot better.

Mine have a lot too  I have made a couple of mine a lot better but not completely removed it…

dont feel too bad, im pretty sure 80% 2nd hand part of my collection isnt washed and i wouldnt even know where to start so... we wont be doin that lol
I think that's what's kept me from doing it for so many years - not knowing where to begin! But I figure I could just go one set at a time... like first the TAFs... then the TEs.. then maybe the brother ponies... and then allllllll the babies.... right? RIGHT?!?

sounds like a great plan to me lol

If it helps you arent alone. I am ashamed to say I have an entire box of decapitated ponies that are mid clean up and I never finished. Its so much work I havent had the time! It takes time and planning and supplies! We'll get there eventually!!

You know what would make them look worse? If you tried to restore them badly and did things like brush out their ringlets! Like, oh I dunno, exactly like I did as a brand-new collector! o_O Sometimes leaving well enough alone is a good thing, ha ha!!

Spa is completed and here they are!

Tootsie Tails turned out beautifully. Her braids were quite loose though.

And for only doing one shampoo and then wrapping the mane with a paper towel... TAF Sundance looks good too. She could definitely use a conditioner/flat iron treatment... But even so, she looks much better than before.

Hot hot water and conditioner...I've managed to flatten and smooth a ton of tight braided hair with some patience. Good luck!

Haha Sundance looked like she wanted to be a Perfume Puff with that hair! Nice job fixing them up so far :)
Also I really only wash my ponys if they need it (like if they came from a thrift store, feel sticky, or idk a cat chews on their ear or something) so my childhood ones haven’t really been done either :)

Don't feel bad! I haven't cleaned all mine either, I have noticed that a couple have started tail rust and I need to get them fixed up but I don't feel they all need it unless they are new to the herd and go into quarantine. I will however do s a few if I need some pony therapy sometimes ;)

I'm pretty guilty of that myself. My childhood ponies need a trip to the beauty parlor and some TLC. When I pulled them out of the attic in the late 90's when I rebooted collecting I did attempt some "restorations" to a few. Sadly back then the zit cream tip hadn't been debunked so I still have a handful damaged from that. One day I'll get around to do a proper clean on everyone. I did recently clean and style my Peach Blossom flutter who also had braids from 20+ years ago. She was my only flutter who didn't have replacement wings yet so I finally ordered her a pair and gave her the spa treatment. Her hair was actually much nicer than I expected. I guess the braid helped keep it smooth. Some good conditioner and several dunks in boiling water and it came out quite nice.

5 ponies a day! Sheesh! What a task! I could maybe do 5 a weekend LOL you inspire me!

Oooo! Where have you ordered replacement flutter wings from @Gingerbread ? I've been thinking of doing that and haven't gotten around to it.

Not gonna lie, my five a day scrubbing got completely derailed this week by my husband's birthday and some other things. Hopefully will get back to it this coming week.

starlight.studio on ebay is where I've gotten them over the years. Right now I think they only have "flawed" ones listed but when I ordered a set of those they really didn't look that "flawed" to me but maybe I got a good pair.

I love when TAF Sundance's hair turns white, and I love it even more with that texture! Matches her periwinkle eyes. I think you're lucky it stayed that way through the cleaning- She had a multi-decade wet set for that braid-out. :sleepy::streaky::molasses::sweetsuds::ponylove:
