Defrizzing without a straightener?

Hi folks!

I have a Rosedust with REALLY bad hair. A total frizz nest despite multiple washings and combings. I usually see cases like these treated with heat, but I've never used a straightener before and don't want to goof it up. Does anyone have some alternatives that could still help fix up my poor Rosedust? I've googled and read walkthroughs before but would love some personal accounts.

Thanks! :flutter2:

I am actually currently working on putting something together but until then, this method works well and you should have great results with Rose Dust. Just please, please be very cautious with hot/boiling water and with pony hair colours like Sugarberry and Surprise as their colours tend to bleed. ;)

For extremely stubborn hair I’ve also shampoo’d, conditioned as above then added a 24hr soak with coconut oil in the hair then do like the above video exactly and it’s always worked miracles for me.

Good luck with your Rosedust!

We might be able to help better if we see how her hair looks, but I can tell you what I do to defrizz doll/pony hair :) I also don’t have a straightener so I don’t use heat.
First I just use slightly warm water and any type of white or clear conditioner I have on hand, I leave the conditioner sitting in the hair for around 5 minutes before rinsing it out. Then while it’s still wet I use a really thick toothed comb (I think it came with a McDonald’s cutie mark crew pony) to try and get the major tangles out. If I can’t comb it enough then I do the conditioner again. And then I use a paper towel to partially dry the hair, massage Dr. Woods peppermint Castile soap all through it trying to keep the hair as straight as I can and let it sit for anywhere between 10 and 40 minutes depending how bad the hair is. Lastly I rinse the soap out again with slightly warm water, use a Barbie hair brush to make it nice and neat and let it air dry. I usually brush it again once it’s fully dry too.
Goodluck to you and Rose Dust!

Thanks for the link Skybreeze, it's really helpful! I appreciate the advice. And thanks AzaleaArt for your detailed method! I'll give both of your responses a try when I can - one and then the other if the first try doesn't work.

I don't have a good pic of Rosedust at hand, this is the best one I have atm:

It's pretty dark and her tail is braided, but you can see at the end of her tail how puffed out it is where it's not braided anymore. That's basically what all of her hair is like :sadpony: Hopefully something will work on her. Thanks for your help!

I know you said no straightener... but I got mine off ebay used (conair 3/4 inch ceramic instant heat with low heat option that is all I use) for like $10 incl the shipping so half of what they usually are and since really what I was trying to do was use the conditioner and heat to melt the nylon fray back into a strand I swear by a straightener. I find suave anti-frizz at the dollar store works great at "fusing" the fray

I started out actually using my old iron on a low heat seating with a massive coating of conditioner and tea towel to de-frizz and that worked out generally for even really bad frizz. Nylon is pretty impressive in how it cleans up. And I second the coconut oil additional soak

I really really really want to stress if you use an iron, keep it on the low setting and keep moving as you "iron" the hair = do not press and hold

Good Luck!

So I have a lil update on Rosedust!
@Skybreeze I tried the video you linked! I did it twice, with hotter water the second time. It did a LOT for her mane, but her tail is still.. an experience lol. I think I might just have to take the plunge and use a straightener so thanks @maycrestmom so much for the advice on that!! :satisfied:

Before combing:

After unbraiding and combing  you can't see it here but the bottom of the tail is bonkers.

After my second try:

Her tail is SO POOFY. If the whole thing was like that you'd think they made Perfume Puff flutter ponies at some point.

Anyways I guess I'll have to use a straightener after all!

Try leaving some conditioner or coconut oil in it over night and do the process again. You might get good results that way too. At least while you wait to get a hair straightener.

OMG, I know how you feel about the straightener! I'm scared that I won't put on enough of the cream-stuff and burn it! (I'm also "not old enough" to use one. Geez, Mom, I'm 13!!!:hmph:)

I’ll try some of these techniques too when I have time. Some of my ponies have ridiculous puffiness. My Daffidazy is like a perfume puff SLH. She probably looks at my Lily Lightly like “how did you keep your hair so nice?”.
This will mean trying to take her remade cutie mark out again to make sure it don’t ruin

yeah I have to admit it was the frustration of really trying to find a way to seal those frayed ends that finally was my main reason to start using a straightener once the hair had been prepped well with conditioner/hot water/brushed out

I have a little question relating to this, does it have to be a straightener or does a heat curler work?
A curling iron can work. I have a large one. In diameter. It works almost better than my straightener, since it’s heat settings are more reliable and it just higher quality. I would think a small one would be great for styling purposes.

Any luck with a straightener yet, anyone?
I’ve tried numerous times before with the hot water on Daffidazey but I’ve tried leaving in the container a couple times now and no luck
Before I did the conditioner:

And after the last time I did it:

Her hair usually bunches up like that. It’s like she’s dragging around a huge carpet. I can get a brush through it but it’s just so puffy! The purple and blue parts are the worst for it but he tail and yellow parts are fine but they could be better. I have other ponies in need of straightening too but Daffi is a SLH so it’s essential

Is this the point where it’s time to get out the straightener?

EDIT:
I did see the Ariel video and this one but Ariel didn’t seem like Truly_Scrumptious’ Rosedust or my Daffi to me. I also saw this but I couldn’t see how bad Starshine was but I’ll put it here anyway in case it helps anyone else who views this thread because it shows the process with a pony

As I’ve said, if you don’t want to use heat with a hair straightener the next best thing is the Ariel method with HOT water. I typically use boiling waiter, with gloves on to protect my hands but I would suggest maybe not handling as much (I don’t have feeling in my hands).

Then I will do a 12-48 hour soak with coconut oil on the hair. Then do the shampoo/conditioner treatments again. Defrizzing isn’t a quick fix for a lot of ponies some require a lot of treatments and sometimes hours of work.

It is also critical that you completely brush out the hair before you wet it. I’ve been seeing a lot of videos going around lately that have improper techniques and that’s concerning for the future of the integrity of G1 ponies.

Anyways, here is my MPP that I restored a few years ago now. Her mane and tail are both silky soft now even years later. This was fixed with the hot water treatment & coconut oil then back to hot water.

I’ve used the boiler water technique a couple of times before before. I’ll retry it a few more times, maybe I didn’t do it enough. Thank you! Also, the pictures are a great help, especially with your MPP

I’m sorry about your girl’s frizz:( I actually have used a straightener with success and the lowest heat mine has is 350F. I use a vice clamp to hold my pony’s tail (in this case, it was Buttons) to the table, and I did begin with just a small section to make sure I was left with melted pony goo. I originally put conditioner on the tail first but that seemed to be gunking everything up. I think it turned out well and have included a pic to shoW the contrast. Good luck:)

Ahh all these before and after pics are so helpful! Thanks everyone!!

@Skybreeze that Pretty Pony is FANTASTIC, you really gave her new life with that hair treatment!

@StormMaeker That is exactly what my Rosedust is like!! It's ok on top, but then it's a fluffy cloud at the bottom. So frustrating lol.
