I don't have access to her at the moment for pictures of how she looks now, but I used hot water and a clothing iron with a towel on one of my ponies with super bad frizz once. (I don't have any heat-based hair curlers/straighteners, just really old-fashioned hair curlers like the ones on Kiss Curl.) The iron was set on steamer mode. And to make sure I didn't burn the pony or her hair, both were kept damp. I also kept a damp towel between the pony and the iron.
She went from an afro to mildly frizzy. I'm happy with the results, but she still doesn't have silky smooth hair.
(Since we're throwing out different methods, I thought I'd share one I tried. I'm really comfortable with an iron from all of my sewing, but this method could easily burn the pony or its hair! If you attempt it, be very careful.)
