hello! i've been interested in trying my hand at customs for a long time, but this will be my first one! let's hope it doesn't end in disaster...

i would have made a mockup, but i've been sitting at my desk doing art and visual stuff all week, so i'll bother with doing that later LOL... the basic plan, however, is to make a y2k aesthetic or 90s/00s themed pony!
from the aesthetics wiki:
"According to the Y2K Aesthetic Institute, some of its aspects include tight leather pants, silver eyeshadow, shiny clothing, Oakleys, gradients, and Blobitecture. Most Y2K aesthetics rely on the use of technology and slick futuristic looks, signaling the optimism of a new era..."
i know for sure i'll be repainting her a shiny metallic silver for that "the future is chrome" vibe, LOL!
i received my bait pony in the mail just today, so... let's open her up and see what's going on? :surprisepony:

i thought she'd be a good candidate for a repaint since she has quite a few stains and scuffs, although there are obviously going to be some challenges too, considering the glitter and 3D symbol... which, if you've ever wanted to know what they look like from the inside, here you go!

she's also missing a magnet, so we'll see what i end up doing about that...

If you want an easy way to get out the 3D cutie mark I suggest heating her up with warm water or a hair dryer and it should just pop out easily. I did that with my Daffidazey

I look forward to seeing how this turns out :Flutter4: the Y2K aesthetic theme sounds interesting

I'm trying to think back, let's see I was about 18/19 years old. I remember writing on dark or black paper was a new, cool thing. Milky and jelly pens and the swirl colors pens where you had multiple color inks in the one pen so it came out as a swirl of colors on your black paper. I envision her cutie mark being like that. Kinda rainbow swirls under black with the image scratched through. You know what I'm talking about? I also remember most of my wardrobe either being along the lines of Tomb Raider, The Matrix, The Craft or my own blend of punk/goth/medieval theater princess LOL silver and black were popular colors in general. I'm trying to think of anything else.

I remember people chattering about the potential end of the world cause the computers that control missiles aren't going know what to do when the clock resets LOL it wasn't really something people took seriously though. I don't think anyone actually worried, but were a little curious. I worked at a Hallmark part time and we had a small section of Y2K stuff, I still have a Y2K bug mug and a small time capsule I bought from there. We filled the capsule on 12/31/1999. I haven't opened it and have forgotten what I put in there. Maybe for 2025 we'll crack it open and see. I do remember staying up to watch the ball drop (and wait for the missiles LOL) and we're in the house, all the lights are off except the tv and a few seconds after the ball drops the tv shuts itself off and we're just in dark silence. For a split second we're like, what just happened? Did something ACTUALLY happen? and then realize we had the tv on a sleep timer and it was always set to turn off at midnight. We all had a chuckle at that momentary panic.

Oh I am EAGER to see where this goes. I'm loving that y2k has finally reached the point in time where it is now retro and romanticized, now that the kids who grew up in it (coughs, gestures to self) are all grown up and defining new visual styles.

You're definitely going to want to work with some gradients. And the chrome is a winning idea-- "Everything is chrome in the future!"

It doesn’t seem like it wasn’t that long ago. My daughter was laughing at me today. I had put on a pair jeans that were hip huggers & they were sliding off. i remember why I didn’t wear them much. I told her I used to wear them & bare midriff tops. I didn’t care to wear them then. But I guess I’m old now, ugh turning 42 in Sept and she’s 19.

oh for hair accessories for the Y2K pony butterfly clips. I do believe everyone used to wear them.

If you really want to give her that authentic early 2000s look, you should paint her orange and sew her an all-denim outfit.
XD if i get my hands on a denim blue, i would love to give her a double denim outfit!

same here! i wasn't around for much of the 90's, but seeing art and design from this era really hits me with the childlike wonder and imagination <3 especially video games and toys!

XD i certainly did! i went looking around to find some just in case we still had them, but nope... they were those mini pearly plastic ones, in pastel pink and blue! i remember using them to style my childhood pony collection, too!

and of course, thank you all for the love, especially the ideas and suggestions! i'm going to make a new version of the mockup once i've decided what color tinsel to use to see what i can do about some fitting accessories :winkpony:

i ended up going with sky blue as an accent just because i liked it the best with the silver, but it ended up making me think of a name and cutie mark for her - "dottie net"! maybe she's a web designer or something...
her mane/tail style is long and straight purely because i remember that being the style everyone i knew wore it in :tongue:but i think it suits the sort of "cyber" vibe!

here's the progress on the actual custom right now:

she needs another coat(s) of gesso before i add the silver paint, especially since i only remembered that i forgot to fill in the hoof damage and 3D symbol just today... :surprisepony: (already done in the picture! the symbol is more dry than the hoof, so it's whiter and blends in much better!)

@starscout @feelysonheelys thank you guys so much!! :lolpony: hopefully i can translate it into paint well enough!

(pic taken beforehand) the 2nd coat of sealant's drying! the can gave out afterward... :hmph: typical!!

ignore that the rest of the neck is gone, mistakes were made XD

Awesome! She reminds me of an IMac :D
