I decided I want to try my hand on customizing a G1 pony. because I am bored and want to try to see if I can mimic one of my RP characters.

Can I dye the hair black, or is it better to purchase the hair? If purchasing and rehair myself is the better option, where do you guys recommend getting it?

If I have to rehair, what size needle do I need? Regular sewing needle? I see people make their own tool. (Sorry, newbie at this!)

As for the body, can it be dyed black? If so what dye? If not, any particular acrylic paint recommended?

If you want the mane and tail to be black, just dye the whole thing with RIT dyemore. I was told that one could dye a G1 with RIT all purpose dye, but I would play it safe with dyemore since that is for synthetics. Sometimes, depending on the color, dye can come off, but I don't know if black, gray, or sapphire blue affect things around them the way red and purple do. If you want to drain the extra dye, then you can reboil some hot water, turn it off, and keep the pony under there for a while to see if any dye drains off. I hold it under with tongs, but don't let the tongs touch the eyes, they will scratch! Then run the pony under warm water, then cold water, or a cold water bath, and then a vinegar bath.

Erase symbols with 100% acetone nail polish remover before dying as the symbol will repel the dye.

Dye could rub off on other ponies that touch it, although I personally think that this is more possible with red, brown, purple(including blue/purple), green (including blue/green), yellow, and orange, and less common with certain shades of blue, gray, and black.

There are also tutorial videos on youtube.

You're welcome!

You didn't mention which generation you are doing, I finally made a G4 playful pony (not 6") custom, and apparently you have to exacto knife the neck plug out in order to give it a tale. In regards to dying, gens 1-3 have bodies that are easy to drain and dry by popping the head off. I had to be a surgeon for the G4 (and my "patient" has some scars!).

Anyway, good luck on your all black OC!

G1 (I did mention it lol)

I cleaned Twilight up, removed her symbols and cut her horn off and epoxyed the hole. I'll sand it down once it dries before dying. I'm going to attempt to dye two tails, a rainbow and Twilight's original white to see which comes out better.

I chose to use twilight because of the contrast in her mane (white and chunky purple)- it might make for a better light/dark black mane for contrast

I'm going to take a ride to Hobby Lobby to see what dye they have as well as paints and doll hats for her (actually him but yea)

i am happy with how the dye job came out. Im actually impressed with how well it worked. Just the epoxy had a different shade on the forehead where I covered the hole from the horn- that's ok, i made it work.

I was hoping the mane would have contrasting black since there was purple and white. It came solid black. the white tail vs rainbow tail came out identical too, lol. so much for choices.

Im glad I dyed 2 ponies, one as a tester to see how the paint would look and such. The head on the one I wanted to use came out more grey and slightly splotchy. The throw-away pony's head dye job came out much better, so I switched

I'm glad you mentioned that the epoxy dyed as well...I have a pink Celestia that I dewinged and filled in the hole with epoxy sitting around and I had no idea the epoxy would ever take dye. Also, the pony in my profile pic dyed unevenly, so i held it it under boiling water until all the extra dye came out and it was even. However the grey didn't come out, it was a combo of two dyes, gray and purple. it came out bright purple, and I drained all the purple dye out by holding it under boiling water. none of the gray came off and it wound up even. dye is unpredictable!
