Good morning everyone, I am wondering if anyone has any hints for coping with exam stress.

My daughters have end of High School exams starting next Wednesday and going for roughly 3 weeks.
The first exam is English and it will go for 3.25 hours. The results they obtain will determine their future University placement.

They are anxious and feeling quite stressed, I was wondering if anyone has any hints that would help to manage the stress.

Many thanks :)

Wow, 3 hour exams really suck.

Well, they are not alone. I've been dealing with exam stress for the 11 years I've been in school. This is what works for me:

Make a plan of when, how long, and what you will study for each day leading up to exams. Knowing that I have a plan kind of eases the stress of wondering "will I be able to study in time...?" because then I tell myself, this is the time I have and I'm going to use it wisely, so don't sweat it, Self.

Second thing is that I make sure if I am studying and I get too stressed to take half hour breaks or so. I am no good at studying when I am too stressed. Also remember to eat regularly. Studying on an empty stomache just makes it worse. Also remember that at the end of the day before bed, always take an hour off to do whatever you want. That way you can calm down before bed and get some sleep and you don't stay up all night with your mind racing.

Thirdly, if I am freaking out about how well I'm going to do, I tell myself, "If I don't get 100%, it's okay. I'm going to do my best and I'm going to be satisfied with it." Then I stick to the study plan and resolve that that's the best I can do.

And if all else fails, eat chocolate! Yum!

I used to meditate before classes, so I was focused on the task at hand before I took the tests. I had a good breakfast, and that helped as well. A lot of people start to fonder during exams, simply because they're getting hungry.

Agreeing with what has been said - eating regularly and sleep are so important and drinking plenty and regular breaks from study. I work as a school nurse in the UK and the amount of exam stress young people are under these days is a lot! I also recommend some relaxation techniques or cd at bedtime if finding it hard to relax enough to sleep. Good Luck to your daughter :)

Exams are finally over. YAY!!!!!!!!!! High school has officially ended. Now we wait until the 15th December for results.
I have alot of stuff to catch up on around here, you have all been soooooo busy , I have loads to read. I shall try and do that between work, which is now ramping up for the Christmas period, we have about 6 weeks of crazy and extra hours also.
How has everyone been?

Huzzah! Congrats to you and your daughter for getting through high school craziness.

Congratz on making it through high school! That's an accomplishment for everyone involved – the girls for working hard and the parents for putting up with it all. I never finished high school myself because of financial problems, and I now know what a mistake that was. Whether your daughters make it into university or not, they are now in a position to find decent jobs once they leave school. I wish that I could say the same!

Now the whole family can breathe a sigh of relief for a bit! Congrats!
