G3 G3 Disintegrating Hair Syndrome

this is why i wish i wasnt so afraid of rehairing, lol :sleepy:

I can confirm that some Glitterbelle do have this issue - the dark pink\purple hair may start to fall off (one of the three that I've owned had this issue)

I've also owned one Tangeringe Twinkles that had this issue the other one (that had a bit darker hair) was fine, I think that I managed to keep most of her hair.

I did brush Royal Bouquet (3d symbol) whose darker hairs started (only in tail) started to break.
Same thing happened to 3.5 Cheerilee (the one with changeable pigtails - Super Long Hair Ponies) so it may affect other Cheerilees.
Also I had Tea Lily (had one with no issues, one had red hair breaking in tail ), Romperooni (had one with issues and another with none), Sunny Daze (Dress-up Eveningwear)

The ponies that have issues do seem to have hair that has a bit of a different color compared to the ones with no issues.

I don't have any of the above mentioned ponies, but that's sucks. :sadpony: Why was used different material there?
after my tea lily's hair completely disintegrated in my hands last month, i did some digging into why and found a thread on the mlp arena about this issue and folks there were theorizing the hair is polypropylene instead of nylon. it's known to completely degrade in other dolls as well.
I have a childhood fakie pony (almost 30 years old) and I am currently rehairing her. Her mane just crumbled to dust. How do you tell what kind of fibers were used by a pony or doll? How does polypropylene hair feel when you touch it? I have a sexond-hand Disney Elena of Avalor doll by Hasbro and I thought they used nylon, and when I started to clean, the hair's texture was rough and almost resistant to water. Some G1 manes are also very frizzy, especially some colours, but washable.
I have Secret Wish and Piccolo. I remember when they came out that Brights Brightly (and Maybe Whistle Wishes) got some complaints about the quality of the red/pink parts of their hair.
This seems irritating from a collector's perspective, but if it is a chemical reaction then shame on Hasbro! Since the hair isn't warm it probably isn't one, but still, they knew about older collectors from way back in G1 (Scribbles and Dabble are advertised for collectors), and some people have hand-me-down toys from their parents, so to make hair that disintegrates in 25 years is a no-no.
Maybe they didn't do a proper research on materials, but this is a major product design flaw from a company who made brushable toys for decades.

Some of issues like that show up years later, so if a company uses a new material \ prepares toys in a different way they may be unaware how it will affect a toy later on. This does remind me of the glue issue that some Mattel dolls have.

i have a handful of ponies prone to hair disintegration, and while their hair hasn't fallen out yet (aside from tea lily), i have noticed that in half of them their hair is very matted, and very dry and rough in all of them. it makes an audible crunch sound when i pinched it between my fingers. other than feel, i'm not sure what's a good way to tell, and even then i wouldn't be entirely sure by touch alone. if anyone else has better knowledge on this, please weigh in.

Yes, it can be the case. Maybe they didn't design these toys for eternity. 15-20 years is a long period after all. Maybe Hasbro tried something cheaper, however, nylon is proven.

Thank you for the explanation!

These gals are so prone to this as well. Especially the pink.
I have some fakies from the early 90s, the Mei Ah "rainbow family" with similar hairstyle, pink-yellow-blue. Only the pink hair disappeared completely, the other 2 colours are still intact. I've cleaned the unipeg with blue tail and I found some small parts of the pink colour in the tail inside the pony.

Yes my two childhood fakies from this same line, im pretty sure theyre called Crumpet pose fakies?, have all lost their hair too. One yellow and one pink. I went to wash them and all their hair fell out the second the water hit it.
Ive also really been wanting a strawberry sunset, hopefully i can find one in good condition! I love the rehairs! <3

To be fair, I don't think most companies plan for longevity in their products. Should they? Ideally. But most do just enough to get by. And of course, accidents do happen. I don't think that hair falling apart 20 years after production is planned obsolescence or anything.

this is why i wish i wasnt so afraid of rehairing, lol :sleepy:
New tutorials are coming soon ;) Start with a fakie! I have 2 for free in the freebies board who would love some new hair! ;)

It's impossible to say without Hasbro's word, but theories revolve around particular batches of hair being made incorrectly at the original factories, to ingredients in the hair being in short supply or flawed, to Hasbro just cutting corners on quality to save money. It's anyone's guess, so far.

I think this is an important point. ;)

I think that until you brush or even touch the hair, that it's very hard to tell. This pony looked great and the hair felt pretty soft, and then.....

I was just gently and idly brushing while watching YouTube, then looked down to see that. :sadpony:

Is this known to happen with ponies of other generations before like the G2 McDonalds ponies from 1998? I picked up an Ivy today in the secondhand shop and when I brush her tail, some of it comes out and I think some breaks off (I had bits of it on my lap). She’s drying from a wash right now so I haven’t got a picture to add right now.
When I was buying her, another Ivy in the charity shop had no tail at all so I think maybe that one just fell out

I do have a Romantica that had "melted tail" or something like that. She lost about thirty five percent of her tail because I am not the type to let hair that is unrooted just sit there for display, lol, so I combed it out. I think the topic was "how should I rate this seller?"

I went back to that charity shop today thinking I forgot something there but I didn’t but the two Ivys were still there. I’m aware this thread is about G3s but I’m not sure if this is actually the same thing happening or not? I felt it’s worth a mention though
As I said in my last reply, her hair was breaking up on my lap when brushing and then more came out when washing
Here she is when I got her home and after an attempt at combing it and washing it. The next picture is the other two at the charity shop. Not sure if the same happened to them or they just fell out

They’re McDonalds ponies after all

Might just be the McDonald's toys. I've heard about issues with one of their G3 toys and discoloration.
