G3 G3 Disintegrating Hair Syndrome

OMG that's so funny about eyeshadow. "Shadow palettes"!

It's not due to different factories having different materials on hand. It's more like, in situations where Hasbro was like "Oh, this set isn't going to bring in as much profit as we want", they would use poly because it's cheaper in the literal "costs less money" sense.

That's why a lot of the ponies are discount chain ponies (lower price, not as much profit) or the "bonus pony" you would sometimes see in playsets.

I guess we should be happy they used nylon for most G3 ponies. I think it's going to be a disaster once G4s get a few decades out, the later years of those were definitely not made with nylon hair.
Yeah there's going to be a LOT of rotted out g4 tails in the future, and then the newer the g4 pony the more likely it'll be bald on both fronts... All those ugly 4.5/reboot (not pony life) ponies are gonna be even more bald than they already are :lolpony:

So I don’t have any photos right now but I can confirm that Baby Romperooni, Sunrise, and McDonald’s Sparkleworks all have rotting pink/ rotting orange(I call it this because this is the term the collectors in the other circles I’m in call it.) I already rehaired my Sparkleworks and Romperooni. Romperooni’s orange is also very brittle, but only the pink actually fell apart at the root. My Tea Lily’s hair is still holding together but it’s very messy and I’m afraid to brush it for this very reason.
my baby Romperooni seems to be okay just classic frizziness some ponies tend to get. I got her from someone, not sure how they took care of her.

Yea my Romperooni still has perfect hair like right out of the box. It just heavily depends on how theyve been cared for  I havent had any ponies with it yet aside from fakies and one Sunrise a friend got me from a thrift store.

I really hadn’t heard of a non-pink/orange rotting colour until now and I assumed it was because red is such an unstable dye colour… what with fading pink and how some humans are allergic to red dye going near their eyes (why most eyeshadow palettes only call themselves “shadow palettes” now, omitting the word “eye” and putting tiny warnings on the back so they don’t get sued if you have an allergic reaction. )
But yeah I guess the answer really must just be that some factories used Nylon and some factories used Poly, we already know that similar issues happened with Furbies, and that Mattel has horrible hair glue oil seepage issues on only SOME of their dolls.

I'm betting that the tails on g4s will start falling out in 10 years since it's clear they're made of inferior quality material to the manes.
It's interesting that I have some ponies with frizzy hair, and the worst is always red, pinkish red. I have some vintage fakies as well, and from 3 colours only the pink has disintegrated. So something is off.
Side note, but I have a thrift shop find Hasbro Elena of Avalor doll, and I thought at first, cool, something easy to manage, but when I started to clean, it turned out it couldn't be nylon hair. It was gross to touch the wet hair. It may be poly hair, based on the above mentioned.

I noticed the quality difference between G4 mane and tail, and I was wondering, why had one toy 2 different materials? Isn't it penny-pinching? Last week I found some G4s and the tail is excellent, maybe they were bought but never played ponies. I have some reboots, they are newer, but the mane is already frizzy a but. Quality went down during the years.

I received Wave Catcher (and I knew she was a baity pony when I purchased her), and I want to confirm the list is true, she has lost the orange part of her mane. The tail seems to be OK though.
Yeah, she's one of the Avon ponies unfortunately. She's such a pretty one too. :(

I can add that my Blossomforth (Wing Wishes) suffered badly from this - she currently has no hair at all! Unfortunately she's in storage atm, but I can provide pics when I get her out haha. Spring Fever (bundled with her) has always had incredibly dry and frizzy hair but hasn't succumbed amazingly.

I found this out a few years ago when I went to go dust my Avon ponies and those darn magenta stripes just turned to dust itself under my fingers.

I reached the box of my ponies that are overdue for a spa day just recently that coincidentally had a decent chunk of the Dollar General ponies. Everyone was OK until I got to Green Apple. Her mane is OK, but her tail completely fell apart on me. That darn magenta hair again. I’m very glad this mostly comprehensive list exists so I know who else to keep an eye out for. But so far I’m still just having trouble with the magenta color. <3

I didn’t have access to a Dollar General back when they were coming out, so a lot of them actually came from a lot of played with ponies so any roughness to the hair I just assumed was because they were actually childrens toys. So far I haven’t encountered any of them that have water just roll off of them besides those Avons from a few years ago. My memory has gone fuzzy over the years but I do think I’ve discovered other ones where the water rolls off it like a ducks back, but the only ones that stand out right now arevthe Avon ponies. Even my Dollar Generals seem to have the blend because the hair took some water but it wasn’t as doused as regular nylon.

I can unfortunately provide confirmation photos for Jazz Matazz and Wave Catcher. Jazz seems to only be suffering from rotting pink and Wave Catcher from rotting orange, but only time will tell.

Jazz has not been washed or combed, Wave Catcher has been cleaned with dawn, warm water, fabric softener, and a gentle combing and her orange kept coming right on out.

Spring Fever is another very likely contender. I don't have concrete proof, but when I cleaned one I found her hair was breaking off just like we see in confirmed polypropylene ponies. She also has had a couple releases where she was included with another pony, which is further supporting evidence that Hasbro would've used the cheaper hair.

EDIT: I will also be able to provide confirmation photos for Tea Lily and prrrobably Peach Surprise eventually. They arrived while I’m out of town but I had my mom open the package. Tea Lily is confirmed balding, Peach Surprise she says is really dry but not breaking just yet. It’ll probably fall out as I comb her, though.

Since Secret Wish is on the list, can we talk about the “cousin“ condition? You heard about disintegrating hair syndrome, now get ready for dissolving glitter syndrome! The G1s do not have this issue, but I discovered last year when I saw somebody else selling one of the glitter G3s, and now with my own Secret Wish, that the glitter is getting slowly reabsorbed back into the body. In between last year and now that I got spa day for mind, I have seen some really crazy ones for sale with hardly any glitter left at all!

Yea this is always sO weird. Its wild how it just dissolves and becomes one with the plastic. Not even any trace of where it was. o_O

Also I meant to say, I got a Peachy Keen for 2 bucks from the antique mall the other day and she luckily has perfect hair!! So yayyy for that. :D

OMG I have sold some of these ponies a long time ago...10+ years ago. I hope they weren't avid collectors...o_O

What really interests me is that it can affect McDonald's ponies too. Can they even be re-haired? A while ago, I found a really frizzy mcd Scootaloo at a secondhand store. When I try to brush her, the hair stretches, and a few tiny clumps come out! I did the water test, and it must be poly. I'm worried the disintegration process is about to begin.

I mean some of the ones with rooted hair do you have heads that come off just like regular ponies, so you can always try. I haven’t done it with these specific ones, but I definitely opened up some of the older ones like that.

I’ve seen some g3 McDonald’s ponys customized to have brushable tails so they must’ve opened them up somehow :)

Does anyone know if there's a comprehensive hair guide for g3 colors?
